Can a fox take a dog?

Recommended Posts

A fox could certainly kill a small lap dog type, no way would it kill a lurcher, seen whippets struggle when mixing it with one, but a fox is too clever to risk a potentialy life threatening injury when it has the option of escape. When cornered ive seen them give a good account of themselves, one little trick that always made me wonder is when they roll over spraying piss all over, presume its trying to temporarily blind the dog, can any of you foxing guys explain that one.

maybe old reynard has a kinky side, likes a bit of water sports lol

If you know shit all about foxing; how do you know how tough some foxes are ?   Cheers.

can a fox kill a dog? i would say yes would they i would say no how many foxes have you seen that will stand there and fight a dog all the ones ive seen would sooner make a run for it if they can. th

I would imagine it's possible. I've seen some pics of dogs having some nasty wounds from the fox getting a lucky bite. I would suggest that if the fox got a lucky bite it could cause the death of a dog. The dog might still get the fox but then die of its injuries before the owner can get it the correct medical treatment. Not a vet but surely a random lucky bite could puncture a major vein or artery?

No one on here seems to actually know anyone that has actually lost a dog to a fox so it must be extremely rare. As mentioned in the previous post it probably happens more with terriers when they have a fox cornered as the foxes instinct is to run.

Ive had foxes pop veins/arteries in the dogs before...not a pretty sight blood spraying everywhere but they have had the correct treatment at the time so no ill effects...i think the most likely cause of a death in a foxing dog would be infection..ie sceptacemia and such like....know of a few guys who have lost good terriers to truly wicked foxes below ground but thankfully these instances are very few and far between..hope this has answered your question lad..atb stabba

With the average fox weighing in at between 15-25lbs it should be no match for an average sized lurcher that will be twice the weight and size. Obviously you are not going to run a corgi sized dog on a fox. Maybe in a terrier situation underground with a young inexperienced dog but in a straight set too my money would always on the dog. Mind you I've seen the damage a fox can do bite wise as I'm sure a lot of the lurcher guys could testify back in the day. If you lost a running dog to a fox it's probably done you a favour in the long run and saved you the price of a cartridge. :whistling:
