Hey folks, i came across this when i was gutting a rabbit in the field and i've never seen it before, Can anyone tell me what it is. Seems to be some sort of growth on the liver.

I've edited this as i got a message from a very helpful person who raises rabbits from http://www.raising-rabbits.com'>http://www.raising-rabbits.com

He said...

The big green sack is definitely a gallbladder. The gallbladder is attached to the liver by the bile duct. If that liver had not been contaminated with cysts, you would pinch the bile duct with fingers and simply pull it and the gallbladder away from the liver, and discard. The gall is bitter; you don't want to be spilling any accidentally.

And, those round white things were definitely tapeworm cysts, probably a different species of tapeworm than the pics on http://www.raising-rabbits.com - but no doubt about it. The rabbit is an intermediate host for the tapeworm. What you saw was the immature cyst. This is about as mature as the tapeworm gets in the rabbit. (It rarely matures to a tapeworm in the rabbit.) If you were to feed some of that uncooked rabbit to the dogs, the tapeworm cyst would mature in the dog to a full-blown tapeworm. You CAN freeze the carcass for a few days, which will kill the cysts. You CAN eat a well-cooked carcass, if it is not too loaded with cysts. Somehow, doesn't sound too appetizing to me...

If you are talking about the small round clear bag then yes most likely tapeworm cyst, but the other side is definitely the gall bladder as 'The One' has stated earlier......FACT!!

That is a very pedantic reply bud,as the bile ducts run into the Gall bladder.....FACT!

Martin, yes pedantic, but the two parts of internal anatomy have completely different names and are in completely different positions in/exiting from the liver, so when someone puts a very clear picture up and ask what its is I would hope that someone would give a correct and clear answer. In the case of this photo 2 it is quiet clearly the Gall Bladder as you said, however to go on and try to turn things as if Im wrong, and now a pedant is laughable.

This is how the internet distorts and spreads lies and answers peoples questions with the wrong answer.

If Irishpigeonshooter had left this thread thinking that the 'big bag in the middle of the liver' is a bile duct he may well teach his friends and children that same piece of information however wrong it may be.

So Yes I did get on my horse and state what is right and then this sort of things happen.

Quit while your ahead mate, you were right with your answer, however then sticking up for another forum members answer, even when you know it is wrong is just silly.

'The one' did reply with his thoughts as he is old enough to be his owner keeper, he said thats what they call the bag up by him, now he knows its the gall bladder and can pass that correct knowledge on to anyone he wants.

Did anyone catch the tapeworm cyst ON the, er, gallbladder?? Looks to me like an immature, still developing cyst, as compared to the more rounded cyst on the liver itself. I could be wrong? The gallbladder is usually very smooth, glossy, and of a uniform color. (Look to the left of the...what is it...light reflection off the moistness?)
