Hey vermiator,

please dont get me wrong, collie crosses, as any other crosses have their uses, I know, some lads Ive visited or been out with swear by them. I remember judging a raker smooth coated one years ago (Handcock bred) at Mindrum just over the border, it was like nothing I had ever seen before in a collie cross, what a length, the brother to it was also there, maybe not the scope as the first one, but again a nice beast. These were the 2 best examples Ive seen of this cross. I will try and find the photo of it, have it somewhere, I always appreciate a good dog, no matter what cross, put it overall champions on the day.

Beginning to think so, as I said, it always stuck in my mind as being a lovely dog, if Handcocks dog were all like that, he would be flying. Try to find pic, I think it might have the boys face on, some of you in fish supper land might know him, but it was around late 80`s

TO MY MIND ,MOST YAPPERS ARE BORN, SOME TAKE LONGER THAN OTHER,S TO SHOW IT, BUT IN THE END ,IT COMES OUT, I,VE KNOWN DOGS ENTER SLOWLY AT GAME , BROUGHT ON BY THE RULES YOU COULD SAY, EVERYTHING GOING NICELY ,THEN JUST ONE SITUATION ,CAN CAUSE THE FIRST YIP, THAT SOON LEADS TO THE YAP, WHAT MAKES IT FRUSTRATING IT CAN BE THE EASEIST OFF RUNS ,THAT BRING IT OUT , THATS THE BOGY , THE LURCHER CAN HAVE IN ITS TIME ,HAVE TREMENDOUSLY HARD CHASES ,AND NEVER MURMER, THEN A EASY RUN OUT OF THE BLUE STARTS IT OFF , THERE,S SEEMS TO BE KNOW REASON ,AND KNOW ONE CAN EVER FATHOM OUT WHY, I,VE KNOWN PUPS RUN FROM DAY ONE, THIER OWNERS BREAKING ALL THE RULES, YET NEVER A SQEAK, YAPPERS ARE DEFINITLY BORN.

Yip learner, totally agree, that was me in my plucky youth, how my first dogs never yapped, blew up or were spoit in any other way is beyond me....All my first dogs were coursing hares at around 6 months, but never a yapper. First 3 dogs I ever had all went on to old age, still lamping them a 12 & one at thirteen, mind you not for our usual numbers, just to keep her active a bit, and even in old age when thwarted by rabbits they would have easily taken in their younger days, no noise. . Ive also worked pure bred deerhounds, catch rabbits long before their first birthday, these never murmered, my dad was a whippet man, when it would take two of these great little dogs to hold a good sized hare, remember them when I was really young, yapping from start to finish on every chase..He bred what he called "dykebackers" looked like whippets, never told me what he put in, these would just lie there when we were ferreting rolled up in a ball as meek as a lamb, but if any rabbit broke from the net or from a bolt hole, they shot off at lighening speed, and rarely missed their bunny, and more importantly, never barked. Where dads whippets were around 14lb in weight would you beleive it, 14lb!!! these dykebackers were more than double that, they ran with yapping whippets and terriers and never barked, :good:
