Working terriers and terriermen

Recommended Posts

Its a very tough question to answer untill you've took a few out and tried it,I have taken quite a few out over the last 40yrs and 99% will let you down, its nice when the odd one gets what its all about, there are too many that think it has to be about 100 mile an hour blood and guts, they miss out on the enjoyment of being in the countryside and taking in the whole event, its just a new hobby till the next thing to try out, good dogmen are born, its not something you can just learn in a flash, they are pack leader's that have gained the respect through experience, not out of a book or the internet, there are still some good kids coming through and most have grown up with dogs or the countryside in their background,I can still enjoy a good walk in the countryside at this time of year without the need to kill everything,"RESPECT" for their quarry and older more experienced dogmen would make it easier for us to give them a chance and the patience to actually listen to good advice when its offered, even when its something you don't wish to hear, atb, wirralman

could not agree more !

you must be some age then  its always been the same even before the ban with hounds ye always had do-gooders ruining a day or terrier work ye always had some divvy reporting ye saying badger bait this and badger digging that ive seen less hassle since the ban than before it simply because i came away from all the registerd packs etc and went into a smaller circle out the public eye and its not affected my sport one bit if ye want your kids to share the same experiances you did do the same

i wont dig with anyone i dont know very well or else they would have to own their own dog and be willing to let it work .i was actually watching an old documentary from the early 90ths about an anti wankerzo4.gifworking for channel 4 came over here to a well known terrier man from england but living in Portloaise at the time as if he was buying a pup but this blokewankerzo4.gif flimed him out on a dig for the documentary the same blokewankerzo4.gif had done the same thing on a few lads with pitpulls over here aswell a few years earlier it showed how easy it is to be set up

Seen it myself but mr p didn't help himself did he

He helped himself alright, just look at the amount of dogs and pups he sold after that programme,he was not heard of before it.Would you bring a stranger in to your house that was after disapearing for a few days after watching a couple of digs, then turn up again with a lame excuse saying his fcuking van was robbed and used in a robbery then take him out diging again,i know i would'nt.

i've have been talking to lads at shows i dont know from Adam tell me about this dig and that dig how good this dog is what they have done .i enjoy going shows and gamefairs but i would'nt bring me terriers to them unless they are pups and one of the kids wants to enter them in the puppy classes .but well marked dogs should be left at home they show their worth in the field they dont need to shown in the ring sure how many well marked dogs do you see even winning the working classes.there is still a lot of loose tongues there just to say lads be carefulthumbs.gif

I only go to a couple of shows a year at most, and i dont bring terriers with me.First as you say there is no need to be walking around with a terrier and half its face missing, and secondly there are too many thieving scum bags about that could easily follow you home and then they know where your dogs are,it might sound stupid but it happens.I have to bring 1 dog to the westmeath show for a chap to see and that will be the first in about 18year and probably the last.

thats a tricky question in general i think the young people of today have no interest in fieldsports unless they are reared in a house have relatives or good neighbours that are into there fieldsports no young person wakes up and says feck it im going too start hunting so with that being the case its up too the people that have an influence on these young people too teach them how things should be done properly too respect there quarry there dogs and equipment etc etc plus they should be made too do as much of the lets say shitty side of things ie feching gear cleaning out vechicle after days outing cleaning kennells walking dogs etc so they see how much work goes into the different forms of hunting before you even get the dogs in the yoke ready for days sport then they can make there own mind up on weather the hard work is worth the joy of owning an honest working dog imo

i dont mean to offend you but you dont need relatives or neighbours that are into fieldsports to get you started. i started of with just a ferret bout 5 years ago, i saw ones for sale in the local paper. i looked them up to see what theyre used for, then i bought one. then i went hunting with people i didnt even know hunted. ferreting led me on to getting a lurcher then lurchers led me on to getting a terrier. now i have 2 lurchers and 2 terriers and 3 ferrets. all im saying is you dont need a relative or nieghbour to guide you. i started fine by myself and im doing fine

Good for you,but it certainly helps if you are brought up around hunting, let it be ferrets, lurchers or terriers. Most of the older lads around me hunted terriers when i was starting out,but that did not mean they would take you out with them.I bought my first terrier in about 1974 and then started to dig with a man who is long since dead now,but my first couple of years consisted of carrying the shovel and spade and holding dogs or running back to the car if something was forgot, which happened quite often. As he got older he sort of got out of dogs so i was left to paddle me own canoe, which i did to good success. There was a good bounty on foxs back then and i accounted for a lot of them which enabled me to buy better gear and to also purchase another couple of terriers, which i did and also a means of travell soon came about, but getting back to the thread it really does help if you have someone to take you out and show you the ropes,to this day i have no problem in taking young lads out diging as long as there not messers and can keep quiet when they are away from hunting.
