Very annoying habit from pup, ant suggestions??

Firstly, it isn't going to grow out of it. My Mrs let our staffy jump up to her so he though he could do it to everyone. Very embarressing when its wet out and he plasters someone in mud. This link is a bit crap but it has some good advice, also search for dog whisperer or ceaser milan

 

 

 

Well firstly you are WRONG there ive had 2 dogs what done it quite alot one just stopped doing it when he was about 12 months and is 10-11 years now and my other also doesnt do it to me anymore but will sometimes do it to other people who allow him to do it and greet him when he does it which is the hardest part to stop .

some need teaching properly , mind just responded to a simple NO ! or HEY ! .

I didnt really want to say nowt like lol but i took the muts out to the usual walk , and he has a silly habit of randomly jumping and pushing himself of peoples chests totally out of the blue , (hes a bit daft in the head) and does this back flip type thing lol youve got to see it to understand what i mean and how funny it is ,anyhow i know its not right but he only does it to people hes used to seeing out w the lamp or whatever but a couple of month back i let him go through the alotments and just before me one of the lads who is a mate of a mate walked through absoulutely blotto , and the dog went flying round the corner after him , anyway 2 minutes later i heard shouting ' come on then ya little shit ! and all kinds of jibberish coming from this lads mouth when i got there the dog had ran up and pushed off his back and pushed him through someones alotment hedge and was stuck :D stuff like this is funny as out , but i agree it is risky leaving incase it does it to an old lady/man or a kid

 

 

i had a whippet that used to try same thing when she seen lamp getting took out, a few little chats soon sorted it tho

it was probably one of the funniest things ive ever seen dotty i just wish there was more to there to see it , just the way the dog was looking at me wagging his tale as if i wanted him to do it

hows your recall if i see someone coming i just call mine to me ,maybe try getting it recall before you take it out its a basic command that at 20 months should know inside out

Her recall is 90% perfect, its been instilled into her from a young pup!!

Usually when people state that the dogs recall is 90%, what they really mean is the dog will come back as long as nothing interesting is happening.... as soon as theirs a distraction then the dog ignores the command.

 

The more you train a dog, the better the obedience and manners. You'll be able to stop them jumping up and also be able to recall from a distance.

 

Best thing to do would be to get to some dog training classes where the teacher can work with you and the dog together.

If the classes are too expensive or not run in your area then either watch videos on the internet, read through some training books (most libraries have them stocked) or watch some DVD's on basic training (Purdey's Progress is supposed to be a very good Lurcher training guide).

 

Start simple and run through every lesson as if the dogs a puppy still. As the dogs almost 2yrs you'll probably find it'll pick it up fairly quickly (or remember it from the last time you trained) but don't just rush on to the next lesson.

Most dog training is about repetition, getting the dog to do the same exercise over and over. The hard bit is keeping it fun for the dog, so little and often, with lots of praise.

Most dogs love to be trained, as it means personal one-to-one time and interaction with you rather than the usual walk round the park where the dog does what it wants.

Train it in anything and everything you can think of, sit, lay down, fetch, roll over, jump on one leg... whatever. The point is more getting the dog to listen to instruction rather than what trick your teaching it.

 

Spend half an hour a day for a full year training your dog to the best of your abilities and you've got a great dog to own for the rest of it's life.

Go at it only half heartedly for a few month's or until you think the dog understands what your after and you'll have constant annoying habits, bad manners and disobedience from it for the rest of it's life.

 

Obviously, this is just my opinion.

, the dog when jumping up on strangers is looking for something its not getting from its owner,

the bond needs to be stronger, if the dog is confident in his relationship he wont look any further than his handler,

one thing i would do is get his drive focused on you through play , ball ,stick ,toy whatever it is you fancy, he needs to focus on you , through that the bond will grow, and the hyper submissive tendencies the dog is showing will disappear in time , its just about making yourself more interesting and exciting to the dog , as the bond grows the confidence grows , and the hyperness the dog is showing wanes,,

you can read all the books in the world but at the end of the day all the mutt is looking for is someone or some thing to tune into to, best of luck with it whatever way you approach it,,

im having a similar prob myself.tbh im blaming the bull in him,as ive never had any probs with past dogs they have all trained with ease.he is good on the rudementery aspects,as long as there nothing around him,if he sees someone or another dog he is over to them wanting to play,something i despise in a dog.but ill percervere and he will learn.have to agree with dotty though,its my crede that if a dog has not mastered basic commands then it should not be off a lead.i keep mine on the lead until i get to where im going.it is a pain in the arse and its pissed me off a few times,as he is fine on other aspects,retrieving and staying.granted he is still a young dog and full of that puppy nonsence,but he just needs to calm down a tad around people.f*****g hate a dog jumping up on me and more so when its one of mine.all i do is yank on the lead when he starts to pull towards the person walking in the park,tell him NO! if i know the person ill walk him over to them and just keep correcting him if he tries jumping up,imo he will soon learn.like i said its a new prob for me aswell,ive never had any probs in the past.its like if someone comes into the house he is mega exiceted and jumping up on them,he gets told no and if he persists he is put in te kitchen.brought out after a bit and normally after second time of being locked in,he realises and just lies at the visitors feet.i know i cant do that outside.no easy option mate just common sense and keep at it.its defo a habit you want broken.good luck anyway.
