I'm not against guys shooting foxes, far from it. Riflemen can cover more ground in 1 night than terriermen could cover in a week. Terriermen plan and select an area to cover in a day out, if you get a dig early in the day the amount of ground you will cover will be less and depending how long your dig takes dictates what you can cover for the rest of the day. Digging is more selective than shooting, if a vixen is dug and at this time of year is heavy with cubs unless it's a call out then I would suspect most terriermen will let it run. On the other hand if she is shot, less game for the following season. I can say that 99% of game that myself and the crew I dig with is released and all I'm saying is the amount of game to be found is a lot less than it was say 5 years ago and IMO part of that could be attributed to riflemen as their number has increased, while the number of men working earthdogs has lessened. I'm not bitching about sour grapes but I bet there is guys reading this that have shot 6,7,8 foxes in a night, it's not that often terriermen will dig anywhere near that in a day, each to their own I know, but if we are'nt careful the hunting of foxes COULD go down the same road as badger hunting. Not an argumetative post JMO.

lokalyokel, its every one to there own i know that and thats fair enough, but the old man has had permission on that ground for about the last 15 years, the others have been on there two minits, and as for weather we would dig to another fox if we had just had one then yes we would, but thats the diffrence with us we have the choice to let them go for another day after we have dug to them, you cant do that with guns,

Fair doos bud... If someone new guy started laying waste to all and sundry on my permission i'd be pissed as well. Its too easy to get the wrong end of the stick on threads and have everything snowball into a massive hangbags session.

Good Hunting mate... no bad feelings. :victory:

some lads around here who used to be lurcher men applied for there gun licences as soon as the ban came in and since they have wiped the fox population out around here shooting 200 plus this season.

i can in no way see how shooting a fox can be classed as sport, pest control yes but not sport, just a waste of a bullet.

it seems that since the ban came in a lot of people shit there selfs and turned to shooting because there does'nt seem to be half as many foxes about in the last couple of years than there were previously.

what the antis don't realise is that this ban is certain to anialate the fox population, theres no such thing as only the fittest survives where guns are concerned, if it can be seen through the scope it can be killed simple ;)

Maybe the farmer wants more dead & that is the reason they were given permission?

Spot on lucky.I was on some permission last weekend, the lad who owned the land told me he'd let a mate's son do a bit of rough shooting on the land.Met him a while later, shooting at everything he was. When he seen my terrier's,he said "you wont be needing them mate" and showed me his pocket full of ssg cartridge's.Another f*****g Rambo,no f*****g idea about the countryside, just get a shotgun get a ticket and a bit of permission and away you go.I know there are responsible shooter's out there, but some of them want a cartridge up there arse.

Well i see it from both sides, I used to be a keeper when foxes needed to be controled so not to get in the pens with the birds. The other problem up here is that foxes dont go to ground very often, I lamp with rifle but I would rather get one either to ground or take it with the lurcher but beggars cant be choosers. I need to control foxes to keep my permision. I'll be lucky if i kill 30 foxes a year up here i have to travel to get work for my dogs.

i've nothing against shooting foxes for real control what im against is faild terrier men becoming fox shootters over night it goes well beyond control its a numbers game to see who can shoot the most

most of these boy dont have permission to shoot on most of theyre spots

and usually travel the mountain roads looking for foxes to shoot

some of them are so fecking lazy they dont get out of the car to retrive the fox or to see if it is dead

wankers

i can see your point but you must under stand.i am a member of a small phesant shoot and my role is fox control i shoot a fair amount but also catch the odd one to ground which iagree is great sport but my primary concern is protection of the shoot birds .this is the only reason we still have legitimate terrier work .i suppose im lucky cos every time i kill one 2 come to the funeral i can see that some people new to shooting see this as a sport .but nothing beats that feeling realising your dog has found

It seems this is a question of what is sport? I thought in sport everything had a chance? But when in the crosshairs of a powerful rifle scope do these animals realy have a sporting chance to make their escape? :hmm:

i do see your point you've got a need and i've got no problem at all with it what i've got a problem with is the boys who have got no reason to shoot foxes they dont own no dirds

or live stock they seen the warrener films got rid of thier air riffles bought a 222 and think they're the dogs bollacks

I know what your saying foxtrack luckly we dont get c*nts like that up here and if we did they wouldn't last long. Atleast some of us have respect for our quarry unlike these b**tards.
