spartan_ferret 6
hi i'm new to joining '' the hunting life'' and i need some advice. I've been hunting with ferrets and Jack russell but i now live in a apartment and my ferrets stay in my mums back garden out in the sticks and the JR is hers. But do you think i could keep an animal in my flat or would it be cruel and which animal could i use for hunting. So basicly it has to be an animal that is practical in the flat and in the field. Cheers for the advice Quote Link to post

Big bald beautiful 1,231
If you have time but space is limited then a whippet would be a good bet Quote Link to post

Cheers for the advice one word (no) , i would stay as you are, (if) you need a lurcher it would be better of with your mum, atleast it would have alot more room. Why not wait till you got a bigger place with a garden.!! Quote Link to post
rob190364 2,594
as long as you had it out every day a whippet would probably be ideal, nice and calm etc. and don't take up much space, and ideal for ferreting. Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Need A LOT more info. I.e - do you work? will it be shut in the flat all day? What kind of hunting? What kind of land? To be honest if at the moment you just want 'any hunting animal' then i think you need to go away and do a lot more thinking and research about what you ACTUALLY WANT, rather than getting something cos it fits in your flat. Calm??? Other thing is , getting a pup, can you put in the time early on, as you can't leave a pup a lone in a flat all day, ir needs feeding an walks during the day a number of times, let alone the negative psychological aspect. All I meant was, if space is an issue and he can give it enough exercise, a whippet would be calm around the flat. If he's working all day and leaving it indoors it doesn't make any different if it's a flat or a house surely? that's an entirely different issue. If he's working a normal working day, i.e. 9 to 5, and takes it for a decent long walk before and after work I don't see why it would be a problem having a whippet or small lurcher. I wouldn't get a pup though, I'd try and find a decent adult dog. Quote Link to post

Great dogs about the house if they have had their fill of work, but mine only ever seems to get to that level after a full winters day bunny bashing, a 3-5 mile walk with free running, i get home, stick the kettle on and by the time it's boiled he's like, right. . . round 2? With regard to leaving it all day indoors, that's a personal choice, i just don't think being stuck indoors in a flat for 9 + hours a day is that fair on the dog. Even though, in reality being in a kennel isn't much different, i for some reason, see it as preferable. If it's gonna spend 5 days a week stuck in all day tho, i don't see the point in getting the dog, it just aint that great a quality of life, being shut up in doors, on your tod day in, day out. And if they are, then a half hour work before and after work ain't gonna cut it. I agree with you on not getting a pup.. . . . but thats tough in itself . . . . getting an adult dog and trying to suddenly subject it to flat life. Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,216
Sounds like you got a pretty good set up for a dog in many ways mate, but as said, do some more research into what you actually like / want / enjoy being around and see whats for you before jumping into buying a dog.
