baw 4,360
all the best dogs I've seen are owned with people who don't work. I work in the oil industry as some folk on here know which means I do some crazy hours which means the dogs suffer. All the guys I've went out with hunting that have had the best dogs have never worked. So I'm asking if in your experience do you think to have a dog at it's peak you really need to be full time dogman? Are all the best dogs you know of owned by unemployed folk? 3 Quote Link to post
johnny boy68 11,726
People who work can tend to cut corners i.e:-buying in ready made dogs,Peeps who don't work can't usually afford that luxury so they have to work on there hounds a little harder. Though whether you work or not some people are just gifted when it comes to working dogs. 2 Quote Link to post

What are you saying, your not a good dog man? I work seven days a week, but I live where I work and there is enough gear around here to keep my dogs busy. So where do I fall in the working or nonworking dog men? But I fully understand what you mean, it's all about having the time. Quote Link to post
baw 4,360
This is true Johnny, but out of the dogs you've seen, who had the best? I have a mate who only works summers, I can't mind him having a bad dog and I mean quality dogs here. Quote Link to post
boyo 1,398
a really good dogman will always find time to do his dog properly but do know where your coming from much easier for them that dont work and got plenty of time on their hands .mind you i know plenty of dogmen that never work and still dont do the dogs properly sobasically if your a lazy twatitdoesnt matter either way.lol. Bosun11 537
I've seen the best and worst of dogs in both camps Baw. What your saying is that if your unemployed you 'should' have more time but I really don't think thats always the case. A good dogman is determined both by the time he puts in and the quality of his work with the dogs he has, employed or not. 3 Quote Link to post

baw 4,360
Good points guys. I put in as much work as I can and I reckon my dogs can hold there own or could have as the case is. It's just when I think back to all the great dogs I've seen, 90% were owned by unenemplyed folk. I was just wondering if this was the same with everyones experienced or just mine. Quote Link to post

I suppose its like a lot of things baw if you can put enough time in,then in theory you should do things to a higher standard.Though this isn't always the case I've seen boys who work long hours but still get dogs to work to a high standard and lads who don't work who would feck a good fanny up. A good dog man will be a good dog man regardless of employment status imo. It's just the good dog men who don't work will get more chances to get in the field.........so they may be regarded the better ones due to being out more. Quote Link to post
