I used to start colour feeding about 3-4 weeks after they fledged the nest. That way the yellow wingbars stay yellow and don't go red, it's the breast and head feathers that are the last to moult. Remember that the wing feathers don't moult in the first year (thats why there called unflighted) so less likely to take the colour food unless the bird loses the odd flight feather, if it does it will replace it and come through with the colour your feeding.

I only used to colour feed in softfood as it gets bloody everywhere when put in there water. I found the colour was more natural too with no burning.

I use red factors to breed my mules with and i colour feed all the time,i just spinkle it on there egg food, condition seed mix but some chicks seem to colour up more than others from the same nest.I tried using it in their water but what a mess and to be honest it didn't work any better so i just stick with the sprinkling now and red water does look odd anyway :laugh:.

I found that too mate and put it down to the buff birds taking on much less colour than the finer yellow feathered birds. have to also agree about putting the colourfeed in the water it just ruined the cages and it got bloody everywhere.

has bbeen said k9 some folk use the egg food syatem ,but for the best results on the feather carophyl his the tried and tested way when moulting youngsters its best to use airy flights ,hence saves the mess in the breeding boxes .hen birds in mules dont take the carophyl has the cocks do and can be a guide for the beginer has which are cocks and hens ,having the mixture in the water correct his a must so one does not burn the birds finished plumage,Noneed to worry about tinging youngsters flight wings tails etc because its only a body moult on young birds unless however some get pulled by other birds .Myself i prefer not to have to strong a mix with the colour keep colour feeding way after the moult and this enhance the sheen of colour over the bird without burning ,i hope this helps and good luck with the stock atb bunnys.
