Moll. 1,770
One of my young canary fledglings, is just standing, beak opening and shutting as if it is gasping for air...any ideas?
iworkwhippets 12,524
Just a thought Moll, but has it access to water, or have you checked for red mite good luck
Moll. 1,770
He is now dead. No mites. Fresh water every day. Plenty of varied food. He was alive ok this afternoon, although i did think it was 'fluffed up'. But put it down to it being so young and the damp weather. Had a check over post mortem and no obvious sign why. Good body weight, clean vent, clear beak?

Meroman 105
Sounds like a respiratory infection called ornithosis, Ornicure is doxycycline which in my view is the best drug you could use to cure it administered over 30 days in the drinking water, that is if this is the case. It/they do not have the pinched eye common with ornithosis Meroman. Do you think it could have been Mycoplasma, have been treating the hens for suspected Myco!!! If so can you advise what dose tylan for the water would the same as the hens be ok gramme per 2 litres?
Meroman 105
The chicks are self supporting so the same dosage is fine. Dosage: Tylan 5ml spoon per pint is what I use over 14 days, some people use 3ml per pint for 20 days...
Moll. 1,770
Sorry i have confused you, i meant chickens when i said hens And the chicks are still being fed by the parent birds. I was advised by vet to use 1 gramme tylan powder per 2 litres of water for the chickens, would that be ok for the canaries also? Edited July 6, 2011 by Moll.
Meroman 105
The dosage I've posted was given to me by a very experienced bird man from Cumbria who breeds up to 200 Norwich canaries every year and I have used this dosage for canaries with success in the past. Moll. 1,770
Sorry for sounding thick Meroman, but are you on about tylan liquid when you say ml's, i only have powder you see, i cannot fathom the ratio of gramme to ml's.
Meroman 105
Yes I'm talking about liquid solution Moll Each ml contains 200 mg of tylan so therefore the dosage we are both using is the same It must be the same for poultry as canaries
