My grandfatther was a miner who couldn't work following a bad pit accident. They never had much money and in those days the compensation was minimal if any. I think they probably visited the island as a holiday of a lifetime sort of thing...they spoke of it often. We where still sentencing people to Death until early 90s , Judge Donned the Black Cap when he was sentencing i kid you not , though they where always later commuted to life by the Home Office !
