Mallard123 1
hi i have 2 springer spaniels for rough shooting and i am now thinking of getting a working terrier as well just as a companion for hunting and flushing game.i've heard before that they can be very usefull because of there fearlessness and aggression and i was just wondering if anyone knew much about them. thanks Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
A terrier worked alongside your springers will quickly ruin any retrieving you've trained them and if the terrier you get is bred for what a terrier does then he'll probably dissapear into the first earth you pass. JMHO but working terriers are a specialist breed that should stay in the hands of terriermen. Quote Link to post

fat man 4,741
Your springers if there any good should be more than capable of pushing anything you can legally shoot without using a terrier. Quote Link to post
Mallard123 1
they are well able all right its just when we go out my father usually takes the springers and we were thinking just another dog could be useful primarily to flush game (by the way its mainly woodcock we shoot) Edited July 5, 2011 by Mallard123 Quote Link to post

Guest dee mac
I agree with both neil and fat man i would mainly be out with the terrier s but i do a fair bit of shooting over spaniels myself have had them all my life and under no circumstance s would i ever of thought of running a terrier with them . I see it on here all the time best terrier for bushing if bushing is your main passion then forget about a terrier as it will never compete with a good hard working springer or cocker and thats a fact as for dense cover if your spaniel is made of what he should be he ll empty game from any cover alot quicker than any terrier plus he ll beat all day long Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
Jeez, I can't believe Fatman said "Sprocker". What's the world coming too? Quote Link to post

A lot of men use them now neil,i think its the springer for strenth and the cocker for drive, but they are a good combination,i see a fair few of them work every friday from september on up in pk shoot. neil cooney 10,416
Terrier man I would question a spaniel that could be beat in cover by a terrier. Over the years I've seen plenty of folk shooting over terriers and sooner or later they usually make that phone call "can you give me a hand, my terriers in a hole". If a terrier went through it's life putting game out for a gun (or a lurcher) without going to ground then I'd question that terriers hunting instinct. Rescues to pet terriers are not that uncommon. It's what they do. Quote Link to post

neil cooney 10,416
Your not catching my drift D. I've no problem with mongerals. I've had some great ones (lurchers). It's the sticking of a name on them for ££££££££££££££££ sake that I have a problem with. Quote Link to post
