hellyer189 93
just curious as to what your preferences are..... Do you prefer a good all round dog that does the job or one dog that is good at one thing, IMO I prefer a good all round dog one that has the spark to do it all not just one but that's me what about you? arcaic conundrum 0
I've have always believed that the dog must be able to work the lot but particularly good at its 'trade' shall we say lol Quote Link to post
johnny boy68 11,726
A true all-rounder would be a jack of all trades but master of none. Everybody would love a all-rounder that takes it all BUT in reality they aren't as common as a lot of folks think. To get a all-rounder you need a good balance of tenacity, agility, speed and power........some dogs don't have all the right attributes for a all-rounder though they usually have traits that make them excel at certain quarry. gamerooster 1,179
some people may have a allrounder, but they may only hunt edible game whereas other hunt the whole spectrum of quarry. for example, before 2004, i had a saluki dog that excelled at catching hares and deer, but sruggled catching rabbits on the lamp, he did catch but not as often as a smaller more agile dog would have, but i still classed him as an allrounder. and i think a lot more dogs are able to b allrounders if there owners took into account the land that they will be running and put the time into the dog Quote Link to post
rwb41959 8
We have dogs for all occasions, shooting, ratting & courseing. It would be a lot easier and cheaper to have an all rounder. 2 Quote Link to post

It would be a lot easier and cheaper to have an all rounder. thats the best way, wish i had the room! me and my lamping partner both got different dogs for that reason we got a collie/whippet x saluki/whippet and a bullx, the bullx is faster despite what ppl say about them but that smaller dog can turn on a button and has the stamina of a pure saluki which obviously wins on some quarry . with that we got everything covered that we may come across, and they work really well together on bigger game. Rabbit Hunter 6,613
Pre-ban...I liked a dog that would do all quarry but excel where deer are concerned. Our main aim was deer, if something else got up then we'd run it. Here's a pic of my old dog, did the job for us. Quote Link to post
