undisputed 1,664
Given Andy Murray's failure to beat Nadal or any of the top 3 tennis players when it matters is there something thats inherently wrong with our mentality to sport. What is it that prevents Brits from taking that final step in top class competions and dominating. Is it our attitude, lack of facilities or are we just not that competative as a nation and content just to take part for the glory of competing. Are to many of our sportsmen overpaid for very little effort or are some sports seen as elitist and and only played by certain sections of society thus having a smaller pool to chose from ie how many inner city kids play tennis or get good coaching. Most competitors from other countries just appear to be hungrier or more determined. There's not many things that we're brilliant at....we have the odd success now and again but there just seems to be something lacking. Is there anything we excell at? Hang on a minute, Murray is scottish. I've no problem with supporting our british sports men/women but when they come out openly stating that they don't follow the same sort of support I personally hope they fail. As for the British sportsmen who just can't cut it at the top I think it stems down to how our sports are handle or the lack of it at the early ages.Until we invest in the youth and push them like other countries we will never be able to compete

Malt 379
Hang on a minute, Murray is scottish. Last time I checked Scotland was still part of the UK, so that makes him British in my book All that shite with Murray stems from him stating that he wasn't going to follow the English football team at the world cup.. That was seen as sacrilege by the English press. Can you imagine that? A non English person saying he wasn't going to support the English football team! Shocking... I forgot Murray is only a Brit when he wins something

Alot stems from the "Non competitive" sports crap at school. A friend at work's young girl had her sports day last week, everyone taking part won a prize. Whats that FFS. I used to hate coming second or last but it made me try harder. Perhaps if competitivness was to be encouraged a little more, we would have more top class sports people. gnasher16 30,382
For the size of our nation we over accomplish in sport. Correct....for a nation the size of Britain we are by far the most succesful nation in world sport....you can fit England into the state of Texas with room to spare....England are rated 4th ( crazy i know ) in the world by Fifa at football,we regularly compete in champions league football finals,we have a world heavyweight champion boxer,a top 4 in the world tennis player, the best snooker players the game has ever seen, the most succesful sportsman in history in Phil Taylor ( if you class darts/snooker as sports that is ) and numerous other champions in other sports.....we are hosting the 2012 Olympics.....id say as a nation we are bigger within the world of sport today than we have ever been at any other era in history. The fact that we are so succesful is the reason our media is so negative.Andy Murray is a perfect example he has reached the Wimbledon semi final every year for the last 3 yet our media want to pull him apart,a 23 year old kid with the world at his feet within his chosen sport !....same as they do with our top footballers or boxers, most countries embrace and love their top sporting figures,we are so f****d up here we think more of some spotty prat laying asleep on big brother than we do our sporting idols. Todays society in England has more to answer for than our sports stars do thats for sure. Edited July 2, 2011 by gnasher16

Agree with most of your points...darts & Snooker aside....I was aiming more at that desire to win that some of these top athletes have....if we use tennis as an example there's no doubt Murray has the game but does he have the desire or that will to dig deep when he gets into trouble....or football why do countries like Spain dominate in football or produce payers of the calibre they do....surely its more to do with just coaching....I agree we do have some top stars here but for some reason we tend to like the guy coming second than the guy who wins if you know what I mean.
