obi2 239
Is there any innoculations that can prevent weils disease or anything I can do to prevent my dogs catching anything while ratting?
christian71 3,187
Should be covered when your dog had its jabs comes under Leptospirosis Edited June 30, 2011 by christian71
budgie123 163
Routine vaccination will cover your dogs for weils disease. You need to be respectfull of the risks to your health also. On a pest control forum recently there was a report of a pest controllers son contracting weils disease after undertaking rat control with dogs.

grompz 706
you can vaccinate your dog once yearly against leptospirosis,i pay about 20 pounds to have the dogs done, well worth doing, as most rats carry the disease, nearly lost a dog through an infected bite a few years ago, watch any open cuts on your hands if in contact with them, also slow moving streams where rats live are havens for it,just be careful. Moll. 1,770
Be aware though. The lepto jab does not cover all strains, there are dozens and dozens of strains and i think the jab covers about seven (if memory serves me right?) So just because your dog has had it's inoculation's still be aware of signs and symptoms of lepto, stop it eating and drinking where rats are etc etc.

It begs the question, why bother at all?

Millet 4,497
I had a terrier die from kidney faliure at 8yr old..the vet siad it could of started year's ago when it of picked lepto up when out ratting..but it will of fought the origional infection off without me noticing it..the dog was vaccinated and killed hundred upon hundred's of rat's so you would of thought some kind of immunity would have been built up..but that was sadly not the case for my bitch. moonlighter 1,164
My mate had a bull terrier last year that died from a rat bite. It was vaccinated but that had no effect.
