It was probably about 5lb and I know there are big mirrors, ghosties and other koi in there so would you say this was a mixture of the types or a mirror with white bits on it? There's a white koi well in its teens in the pond but he is one wary b*****d, you can see him avoiding the bait :wallbash:

How do the koi fight pound for pound in comparison with there native cousins?

The ones in this pond are built like torpedos and go like them too, i had a big white one (not the biggest) on and it dragged me all over the place eventually getting into some reeds and losing the hook (I only use barbless)

I thought that might be the case mate, just looking at the shape of them.

Koi/Ghosties same ting. Koi lay thousands of eggs and only a few will turn out coloured, a lot are "ghosties", there are also dark/golden and when you get a good colour/patterned one, they are worth a pretty penny. And if there are any predators coloured ones don't last long.

Fished white springs in swansea on sunday and this fish is one of only 4-5 koi in that particular lake and can be seen floating just below the surface and has seen every bait and tactic known to man and is rediculously hard to catch and would of been a good fight on the light rod and 5lb line i was surface fishing with but fell for a boilie on a pair of sleeper rods i had next to an island.

It fought 3 times harder than the next one did which was about 2-3 lbs bigger

  • 2 weeks later...

I thought and so does google that a ghostie is a cross between a koi and a common or mirror and they get hybrid vigour from it?

Nice looking fish

It's either a truly pure wild Carp with a slight colour variation (like the ones Koi were bred from) or one that has some genes from Koi that have been introduced. That sounds quite likely to me as you say there are Koi in that lake...Possibly ofspring of that big white one you mention.
