dev 226
Hard dogs are very impressive . I love to dig to a hard dog but at the same time I do realise that the steady mixing type terrier is the best tool for the job. A dog that has respect for its quarry but not too much. A dog that is agressive at its work but sensiable enough not to take a mauling every time its to ground, one who bosses the situation, that will stay the distance untill the job is done. As said in one of mr darcy's book's, a "boxer not a brawler" is the best I feel . 4 Quote Link to post

jonesy 111
I prefer a rough dog,one who stays with its game no matter what,if its two foot or twenty, bosses the game about and dosnt get bossed about. Quote Link to post
Guest dee mac
i found that most of the guys who say they prefare a rock hard dog have never really owned a rock hard dog its ok too watch someone elses then at end of day go home and thats that but the owner has too go home tend too it patch it up put it under lamp and make sure it dos nt go down hill with shock etc then once that been taken care off he then has too leave him in kennells for the next 3 too 4 weeks while dog gets back too himself mean while the dog with the bit of brain s and craft has maybe had 5 or 6 digs over it in this space of time.dont get me wrong out and out sounder who wont get stuck in when pressure is on are of no use too me but the rock hard dog may look the business on the day but he pays for it in the weeks too come plus if you tip a rock hard dog into a big spot its never enjoyable as your trying too get there as quick as you can as you ll know the outcome if you dont where by if you ve the old steady reliable worker too ground everything is off a more relaxed nature and you can actually enjoy the dig ten times better. 3 Quote Link to post

antsa 40
Everyones going to have differing opinions, depending on the land, rockpiles or earths etc, wether you're out with a pack or even spieces hunted. (over here badger is legal). I think this is a great thread and hopefully everyone will respect another mans view even if they dont agree, after all its horses for courses. For the record I like a hard dog that will take hold if he can and draw, (please note, I said hard not psycotic) 1 Quote Link to post
lurcher2020 285
Well to me iys just crazy(stupid) dogs that go in and get smashed a true hard dog goes straight in a does the job no messing getting bit to f**k but that's my opinion Quote Link to post
Aaron Proffitt 142
What one needs out of a dog is so subjective....For example, I run Airedales. It's my understanding the 'dales over there are a show dog and nothing more. Mine are workers to the bone...get pissed when they aren't in the field. Here in coyote country, my dogs work underground,in 'push overs', in and around cattle....and so forth. But I wouldn't dream of setting them to ground like UK dogs Quote Link to post
CorkyJohn 808
Give me a mixer anyday that will turn up the pressure when needed, especially in roomy earths or with educated game. A hard dog always has its place but it must have sense, these dogs might not see as much as others but have to be admired for the way they can bring a dig to an early conclusion when other dogs have failed to 1 Quote Link to post

IMO a hard dog is the dog that goes in and will not come away no matter what he would rather die than leave what he is at.some people have dogs that go and take hold for the duration of a dig but without getting knocked up to badly and then one day they meet the right opponent and when they start getting some punishment they either come away or with a bit of luck they start boxing clever.to me they are not hard dogs the hard dog is the one that goes in and gets pasted time andtime again and to me its a fault but one i put up with. i also think its a must to breed off a hard dog or a bitch to keep hardness and good drive in the next generations of pups coming through Quote Link to post

We used to dig to a lakey that would kill every fox he could get to & would take hold as soon as he was close enough. He was dug week in week out on educated game. He learned the hard way & spent alot of time on the mend but was never worked sore. I've seen the type you refer to & these are the dogs you need to get down quickly to for fear of a dead or seriously damaged dog. Quote Link to post

CorkyJohn 808
I understand what you're getting at Wilko but this dog was as hard as I've seen both giving & taking stick. Not gonna go into details mate but he was a quick killer of foxes & in a 'tussle' he always seemed to be the stronger of his opposition. Loads of times broke through to him ontop of his quarry taking his favourite hold at the base of the neck. Quote Link to post
