Strong Stuff 2,171
how do you know if your dogs fit? Because you will have done the correct amount of exercise and conditioning to get it that way. No animal alive can be fit for hard work unless it has been conditioned. Working dogs are the equivalent of human athletes: they need to train hard to achieve the right level of fitness or they'll damage muscles, lungs, heart, toes etc if they are run unfit. Dogs should have a minimum of an hour's exercise every day in my opinion, and part of that exercise should be steady trotting, not slow walking, but trotting. A few good gallops in between and the dog is half way to fitness. People who take their dogs out mooching every day will have dogs averagely fit, but a few runs at rabbits is nothing compared to a night's lamping or a day's coursing. If anyone wants to read a loooooong article :tongue2: about conditioning then pm me and I'll send them the chapter on muscles and conditioning from my book. i would like to read it skycat could you pm it me please... Buy the book you mingebag! what is the book called mate? It's in Skycats signature at the bottom of her post mate. Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
Couldn't agree more: a dash of Saluki does wonders for adding stamina, fast recovery, all round toughness and so on. A dog which has evolved for thousands of years to survive on left overs, pitta bread, dates and very little meat, and runs in inhospitable conditions and terrain.........just has to be one of the toughest around. 1 Quote Link to post

six pointer 2
a dog that doesnt want to come out the night after and play isnt worth having in my book, but there are exceptions regarding the fitness of the dog in the 1st place and my oppinion on the right x well you cant go wrong with a collie cross, and with the heat weve had this last week any dog is prone to blowing up this was goin to the dogs 3rd nite out an it pissed down in southern ireland dog wet us wet middle of the nite . cold. the strian of bulls and collies found it hard and i seen it . like i sed nocking no xs the fact was the saluki hybred was the dog and there was 2 0f them , and iwill be honest here am not a saluki man ie just into the hares now if fellas like that good on them . but i have sed that i have a collie x coming . a merle pup . i think there will be a change when i see the saluki x greyhound x bullgreyound. when i see the welsh ones on and these are fellas who have had dogs 30 years Quote Link to post
