fray 0 Posted June 29, 2011 Report Share Posted June 29, 2011 hi there First of all im new to this forum and would like to say ive been reading on here for months now ( un registerd ) and found it very intersting/usefull so thought its about time i registerd and had a chat with some of you cracking folks , my name is frazer known as fray im 25 and trying my hardest to get into shooting been trying for land to go on for the few two years or so but no look so far. altho im a grown up and mature 25 year old i still think its my age thats against me, first brought a bsa hornet but sold it last year when i had no where to go with it, now i own a air arms s400 classic .177 , brought it to kill the rats on my dads allotment , now they have all been dispatched i have nothing left to hunt , any help from you guys would be grate , info or people willing to let me go out with them. sorry for any spelling mistakes im not the shapest tool in the box when it comes to writing hahaha Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Col_c88 41 Posted June 30, 2011 Report Share Posted June 30, 2011 Hi welcome to the forum! i actually got a shoot by doing some work for a guy (im a tiler/plasterer with my dad) and he gave me a chance.. however that was just to get me started...it took me AGES to get somewhere without knowing the right person. I got my first gun at 19, im only 23 (on saterday) however i now have 4 large permissions and 2 small where i can shoot, ferret and use the dog...and awaiting more (farmers passing my names on to neighbouring farmers).... Getting insurance with BASC helped, it showed im not just someone who fancied getting a gun and shooting stuff. It showed im responsible and taking things serious. After getting my second shoot, just mentioning i had 2 places that i look after peeked interest, name dropping .. "oh yea i shoot at so-so.. do you know so-so?" and just general politness helps a long way. Even a card with your number on if they say no just hand them that and ask them to keep you in mind. Also mentioning what your shooting with and what you intend on shooting helped me. the best farm was also the last i got, me and my dad drove around all day asking people if they need rabbits controlling. there was tons of farms in this one spot and every answer was the same "no we got a pheasent syndicate that takes care of them", anyways the last guy we tried laughed and told us to come back in a years time, we gave him a card and said we will see him in a year... exactly a year later to the day we went up, "ahhh i remember you, still got your card on the fridge! Didnt think you would come back".. just because of that we got the shoot. The farmer even told us to tell the syndicate to piss off if they say anything because we resepct his land alot more, we've fixed fences, gates.. told him were dead sheep are. all of that kind of nice guy behaviour really helps.. and persistance!! You could even offer to help a farmer out around his farm get to know him and let him get to know you, we have helped 2 of our farmers when they have needed it on alot of occasions. it all goes towards getting/keeping your land. good luck and dont give up Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Failing that for now, try to meet a few guys who have shoots who will let you along. Always ask nicely! Check out local farms and go round. A personal approach is far better than a phone call. I find best time is 6-ish, tea-time. Farmers are busy busy people. DON'T turn up in camo and muck boots. Smart jeans, shoes, clean sweatshirt. Then "Mr Smith, would you let me have a go at shooting pests in your land? I'd be using an air rifle on rabbits, grey squirrels, rats, and crows and pigeons on the ground.
