Tips for bringing a pup on

Has anyone got any tips for bringing a pup on from an early age? I know you should let a pup b a pup but what can I include in there play to help bring there instinct out and give them better chance to hone there skills for when the time comes to enter.

If its in them, then they will go.......if its not, then they wont......its why blood matters

 

All you have to do is decide when the pup is ready in its mind to try it....JMHO

 

Dont take my reply as gospel though, there are lots of lads on here with a lifetimes experience who would know much better than me.........see if they reply and listen to them

I'm with wilf on this one. Let him be a pup for now and when he is old enough , try him.I don't agree with the thought that pups have to be out early in the field "watching and learning" at digs etc.when the time is right he will either do it or he won't,simple as that Best of luck.

I disagree with a few of those things i think a pup should be brought out and introduced too diff situations from as early as possible ie travelling in jeep car van walking on the lead given a bit of freedom around the house and fields so as when time come s too introduce him too his sport the only thing you have too concentrate on is getting him entered not dragging him about the fields by the neck cause he was never on a lead or worrying about him popping out of a entrance and taking off across fields like a rocket because he suddenly learned he can run but wilf is right if its in the dog it will always come out but you can do your bit in its early life too help bring that out.

give him a fox tail to rag, bring him out and about in the car so he gets used to travelling, socialise the pup, lead train it, bring him for walks out in the country to get him used to the sights and sounds and smells of the countryside, stock break him to cattle/sheep/pigs/fowl (i have a patt here whos mad to kill my pigs and fowl and ferrets, does my head in)

Take him down the local clay pigeon club to get him used to the bangs it also helps them to cope near bonfire night i also get them confident in water if i can and getting them used to chickens,it can be hard work but worth it when your ratting atb

bang on and ive seen the ones that ad,nt add this sort of bringin up crawlin around on there bellys sick in the boxes havent seen the out side of its pen good grub plently of walks and a good bit of bondin knownin ya dog and its ways

My Ones have been going Beating from 6mnth,socialise with other dogs,Guns hate you! if they latch on to one of theirs,lot of money invested in Gundogs,Definately Stock Break,and try not to let them peg birds.Call and Recall is a must if your going beating,not letting Hunt away to much,try Quatering them.

When their ready for bigger stuff you'll know!Some Fox Guys will tell you to stay clear of Bunnies,depending on how serious you are about digging stay clear,Me I let mine hunt anything,but I don,t mind Digging down to a bunny,but have never had to.J. M. O. and was said before lot more experience out there,LISTEN to it ALL then decide whats Right for YOU !! Good Hunting..

if a young pup was worked on rabbits is there anyway to break him so he's steady on foxes?

I would have them in the fields as soon as they are able to follow me.The more they get used to cattle,sheep and all stock the easier it will be when its time for them to start there diging life.How often have you seen it when a terrier that has not been brought out until its ready or at an age to be ready,stop at drains and wont cross,see cattle and run for its life,lose the plot when tied outside a dig,get it out early and save all the hassle when the time comes to enter it,then it will be calm and should consentrate on the job in hand without fear of anything else,and it can still be a pup as long as it wants,but learning all the time.jmo.

iv seen lad keep terriers kennelled up for 16 months ,bring them to their first hole and wonder why he wont do the bussiness first time at a hole.They then wonder why the poor terreir wont come back from legging it around the fields in circles .Half the time the terrier dont even have a name

I don't take mine out on a dig untill they are old enough and I feel they are ready to start. It stops the temptation of trying to enter them too early. I'm not saying pups shouldn't be taken out for walks through fields etc.each to their own but I don't have a problem starting mine.

I thought he meant by his question is there anything they will help the dog enter to earthwork, of course a dog needs to ratch about as a pup nobody is saying otherwise.

your right there scent that s why they need too get all them wee silly things out of system while there young its handy wnen they actually no there name then when ready too start the only new thing they encounter is an earth with someone at home then you find out if hard work has paid off.
