skycat 6,173
Is she being calm, truly? Or does she lack confidence? A pup that only ever walks to heel without wanting to run and play about seems to me more as though it is uncertain about being allowed to run and do stuff. Have you had her from a wee pup? What age did you get her? A few details about her origins and upbringing and behaviour at home might help. Quote Link to post
alcamy22 7
got her just before 5months she will run off with the other dogs but the other dogs are very calm and i have them most of the time to heel too theyre never really running wild the very odd time they will but most time they stay close in to me as they are worked all the time and understand that when they stay close to me they find quarry more often than when there off on the own she did seem slightly nervous and freezes when you touch her, however seems very happy wagging tail when i talk to her and jumps up she wont be pawned off on anyone else as id never do that i know she will take work she just seemed nearly over calm for me she seen her first rabbit the other evening but was on lead however she did go to run at it ive no doubt she will work id just like her to be more happy in herself etc Quote Link to post
DottyDoo 500
i have a 3/4 bred grey/deer an he is almost 6 month old now an i wish i could get him to walk to heal tho i would class him as a very calm dog, he aint submissive in the slightest, aint highly strung like most other lurchers iv had, but he dont walk to heal, instead he is always running in circles an grabbing all the other dogs wae the neck lol he is ace around people, dogs, an all livestock an has nerves of steel so far, hope in the future he stays this way as he is almost bombproof Quote Link to post
DeerhoundLurcherMan 997
It has taken me a year to get my dog to walk to heal, he has alot of deerhound in him, a very chilled out dog at home but mad in the field, quietly confident, very game. struggling to pick up rabbits at the mo, he is 12months ,but im sure he will make me happy in time. kev2010 8
I don't think youve anything to worry about. Deerhound crosses are genrally calmer & of a more sencetive nature.Just need a diferent approach. If she's mixing with other dogs, playing & checking out her surroundings,i don't see a problem. You'll probably find it will take her a couple of years to mature. You sound like a calm person yourself,so she should be a good match.Respect her sencetive nature,an im sure she'll make a first class hunting partner.Your mates not far off with what he told you. Atb with her. Kev. Quote Link to post
stroller 341
sounds like a bit of confidence problem, ive never experienced such a controlled manner in a pup, all of my dogs are wired to the moon especially my little lurcher.its not a big problem and im sure once she starts working she will come out of her shell Quote Link to post

dogrunner5 2
Hi Yea I have one of similar breeding, 1/2deerhound 1/4collie 1/4greyhound. He is now 17 months I was in the same situation as yourself, They are a very laid back pup and dont take kindly to strong repremanding. Mine still walks to heel when we are out, but as soon as he gets a sent he turns into a different dog. I didnt see any of this until he was a year old, He has a very high prey drive and is facing cover well and will jump anything infront of him, I had my doubts at first, but be patient, I wouldnt change him for anything!! chook1 184
I wouldnt worry about her - if your other dogs are walking to heal then she will do the same, my 2 year old deerhound when out walking either walks at the back of me or just infront, if we stop, she lies down - if the other dogs are messing around playing then she will do the same, they are very calm dogs anyway and do like to be near their owners.
