Lack of understanding!

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else find it staggering what lack of understanding and sheer lack of common sense some people have regarding dogs?

I put a post on here a while ago about a lad in my office who bought a bulldog for £1500 even though when he went to see it the bloke couldn't show him the dam because it died from suffocation whilst walking, at just 7 years old!

Well yesterday the accounts person in my office finished work at 2pm and went home and immediately took her 9 year old arthritic rottweiler for a walk.........it was friggin boiling yesterday, I wouldn't have dreamt of taking my dog for a walk in 28 deg C heat never mind a very old, black dog with arthritis. Guess what, it collapsed, she had to get someone to help her carry it to the vets and it ended up being put down. She's obviously all upset now and I'm biting my tongue, I really feel like telling her it's her f'cking fault!!!

And another person in my office (there's only 5 of us!!!) is 48 years old, she drives to the office even though she only lives literally half a mile away, and never ever walks anywhere, is getting a dog in the next couple of months. She's trying to decide which one to get....her shortlist is Springer Spaniel or Border Collie, she's swaying towards the border collie. :wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash: I just find it unbelievable how people don't even attempt to understand a dogs needs before they get it, of all the dogs she could pick she picks the one that needs the most exercise of any dog out there!

And a girl that I used to work with a couple of years ago called me to see if I knew anyone who wants a staffy because she doesn't have time to exercise hers and it's cruel. She managed to get rid of it, and the very next day she went out and bought two huskies....I honestly can't get my head around that logic, utterly bizarre! when I asked her what on earth she was thinking she just said "they were really cute" :wallbash::wallbash:

All of these people are intellegent, educated people......WITH NO COMMON SENSE!!!

I honestly don't think there is answer. All licensing would do is cost people money. I have met lots of rich people in my life and not many of them had any brains.   I have never seen the fascinatio

Trouble is because it rarely get hot in this country people don't think of dogs etc collapsing from the heat. I did take my dogs out in the afternoon yesterday but I took 2 big bottles of water and a drinking bowl and we went to the beach so they kept cool by swimming.

You have to realise that most people in the world are idiots. Problem is everyone is too nice to tell them so they all assume they are clever :wallbash:

But what's the answer? Licensing?

I have never seen the fascination with puppies. Puppies chew, piss and shit and you can't walk them very far.

No I don't think there is either. Responsible breeders should be making sure people are aware of the amount of exercising involved etc. but most breeders are just in it for the money so that's not going to work. And some people would just get one anyway, and if one breeder wouldn't give them one because they can't give them enough exercise etc. then they'd just find one that did.

There isn't an answer, how many times do you see old people walking along with a border collie, lab, spaniel etc. that look more like a barrel than the shape they're supposed to be? it's pitiful to see! Dogs that should have bucket loads of energy waddling behind struggling to keep up with walking pace!

No, licensing is not the answer. Anyone (dickheads included) with £5 can buy a yearly license where I live.

I always get my dogs as puppies so I know they are trained properly but I prefer dogs that do what I ask rather than dogs that look cute. It's nice when you see the finished product doing what you want it to do but I don't really enjoy having them around until at least the basics are instilled in them. If you buy an adult dog you can't be sure that the previous owner hasn't done damage to the dogs training. My saluki x was a year old when I got him and has a few issues that piss me off but my two young ones are spot on.

I can even put food on the floor and they wont touch it until they are told to. I just really wish I knew how my 11 year old daughter taught them to do that!

Staggering: yes. Surprising? No. I dread exercise on "nice" days and non-rainy Sundays because all the numpties will be out.

If I had to compile a list of dogs owned by the daftest people, it would be:

1. Black or chocolate labs (the mehusive fat ones not the proper working ones);"they only want to play"

2. Rescued Greyhounds; "your dog's too fat/your dog's too thin/it's cruel to let yours run about like that and anyway mine won't come back if I let him off"

3. "Staff cross" anythings, the bigger and bulkier (and probably wheezier, and lame) the better; "Tyson! Get 'ere! Leave it! Sorry love..."

4. Little bunches of little dogs all knotted together by Flexi-leads; "Oh yours might think she's a rabbit!"

5. German Shepherd Dogs; "He doesn't need a lead because he's trained and he doesn't need a muzzle because he only bites when he's too far away from me for me to stop him!"

And that's the minor stuff... some dog owners have worse or just plain no ideas. A German Shepherd Dog Man keeps appearing in the narrow porch of the building where I live, so that when the lift doors open on my way out, his (off lead and slightly mental) GSD is nose to nose with my bull-cross (and GSD hating) lurcher, with nowhere for either of them to go. I mean once I could understand but three times now. He's just not getting it. One - or quite possibly all - of us, is going to get bitten if he keeps that up.
