i have 2 whippets but they are not IKC reg but they are pure bred whippets 1 was given to me by a friend of mine and i did'nt even ask about papers for him because i got him to work.the dam and sire of him were both registered whippets but as my friend gave him to me i did,nt even ask him about them but as he got older and a lot of other whippet owner asked to use him for stud i asked about the papers but the dam had chanced hands a few times and the papers had got lost along the way but i do like to show and race them at the shows and if i had to show papers for them at the shows were would that leave me and my other whippet is the son of my older 1 and his dam was IKC reg but he is,nt because his sire is not registered

ill be the first to jump so to speak as ive thought on it since saturday i dont want to hijack anyones topic here but at the mourne lurcher and terrier next year the racing will be whippets(papers only)

under 21"

over 21" but under 23"

and over 23" any whippet without papers will be placed in a class depending on height to the shoulder i will see how this pans out after that but hopefully it will sort the problem as best as possible for everyone thanks kieran

i have just started back to these shows again with my son and his whippet and im starting to ask myself why after reading half the stuff on these sites . His pup has no papers so will he be pushed to one side when he starts to it race. We made a point in not buying a whippet with papers because we wanted to hunt with this pup and paying 400 pound for a dog with papers that you inteend to work would just be stupid in my eyes, but at the end of the day these are working dog shows. Has all this started up because of the fella racing his lurcher as a whippet are because people want it kc only whippets at these shows . What will be next will you have to have photo evidence to enter the working class. as i said before i have just started back at these shows and dont really have a place to say this but had to say something.

I judged whippets on day 2 of the fair and I don't see a whippet in that pic!

Now that is a challenge to owner of the winner of the whippet racing!

Anyone with any sense must realise that Matt or any other racing organisers cannot argue the toss with someone who says his or her dog is a whippet. Size solely doesn't really come into it and in fact may not be any advantage - look at Rose Mc Coy's small dog and China too is no giant.

As far as I can see there are three solutions:

1. If challenged, at the show - not anonymously on these forums - the owner should be prepared to meet the challenge by saying how he or she thinks it is a whippet.

2. If he or she has no proof that the dog is a whippet then the Sporting Whippet Club could arbitrate. At one time the KC used to have a classification for interbred retrievers and in fact in my own breed the golden retriever one of the golden winners of the retriever championship was a dog that had labrador ancestry two generations back. Other dogs of unknown parentage could be brought into a pedigree by three senior judges making a ruling that the dog was of that particular breed. Something similar could apply.

3. We can run races for KC registered whippets only and Non Ped whippets.

Albertj

Albert i spoke to you on sunday morning at shanes castle with a sugestion for an elite racing class this could also include the whippets, but i think kc racing is the wrong way to go about this problem as it will only drive a wedge between the whippet people and make it a classes thing how mush you can afford to spend on a dog should not come into it and of you bing kc papers into the racing thats what will happen

i dont think having to show papers will work out because it is not hard to plate a dog up so to speak i have papers here from dogs that are long gone and i could easly produce them for a dog that is the same colour and some people take it so serious that they would not think twice in doing this if people are so bothered about papers go to crufts or the other kc shows this sort of thing will bring the lurcher and terrier shows down the wrong road whats next DNA tests .the people that have unreg whippets will not bother with the shows because their unreg working whippet will have to compete out of their class and we will not see the working whippets at the shows and thats what these shows are meant to be for WORKING DOGS ran by WORKING DOG clubs

Just because a whippet is kc reg it doesnt mean he aint a working whippet. my own whippet is from a long line of working whippets all kc reg

not saying if it is kc it's not a worker because if i bothered to get mine registered when i got him he would be kc reg but i was not bothered with papers because my main thing for my whippets is working and i dont care if they are kc reg or not as long as they work but i do like to show and race them in the summer at lurcher and terrier shows and i have no interest with the kennell club but if i was in it for money it would be a different story.just saying that there is a lot of whippets out there that are not registered but why should their owner lose out when they go to working dog shows because they did,nt pay the kennel club a fee but to put their dogs breeding on a sheet of paper .the kennel club should has no place or influence over a lurcher whippet and terrier show
