hkinsont 0
I have a black lab and a Teckel they are both working dogs and both live in the house, would a pointer be ok in the house or would they tear it to pieces? i work on a farm so dont always get the chance to give them a long walk come harvest time when its 24 / 7 etc,but my girlfriend is able to give them a bit of exercise. any one know how laid back they would be whilst at home? Mickey Finn 3,011
Spanj has a point! They really do need alot of exercise. My wirehair lives both in and out. This is how I would keep one if I were in your situation. When you have the time for him or her. They should be ok in the house. When your busy he or she can stay in the kennel. You will not see any adverse effects from this arangement. ATB Quote Link to post

Need their exercise well a friend of mine has a short haired pointer dog that she had the nuts cut off and in the house it laid back and happy to sleep all day but then when its out it snap's into hunting mode are the wire hairs different than the smooths in temperament? unlacedgecko 1,466
A wirehair pointer is not just a long haired version of a short haired pointer. They are two completely different breeds. If you already have a Lab and a Teckel what do you want a WHP for? Edited June 27, 2011 by unlacedgecko Quote Link to post
lunita 57
think depends on the dog too....all working dogs need good excercise, my parents have had pointers since i can remeber they are english pointers though not german. Anyway they have all been diff ..they all lived in the house but some needed more excercise than others..especially when young. They have four right now and the keenest one out of them all when shes out is the laziest dog ive ever seen in the house!! you will just have to see the dogs personality too. Quote Link to post

unlacedgecko 1,466
I would quite like a GWP as well, but they are extremely hard hunting one man dogs. Have a look at some breed literature and you will find out. I am also a farm worker at the moment, and wouldn't consider getting a dog until after harvest is finished. You say that you would have plenty of work for one at certain times of the year. What would you do with it the rest of the time? I am not looking for a fight or an argument, just trying to get you to think very carefully before putting a lot of money and time into a dog which could turn out to be a mistake. Quote Link to post
hkinsont 0
unlacedgecko i would always get a pup in a quiet period so as i have time to bond with it and train it. i hopefully wont be on a tractor forever as i work on the family farm so one day i will be in a more managers role so i was hoping at that point i would have time to have a dog like a GWHP, my lab and teckel are very happy healthy dogs and they get lots of exercise, obviously at some times of year harvest silage etc they get a little less, but during the spring and start of the summer we have a stalking agency on about 16,000 acres and in the winter we run a commercial shoot and also our own private shoot on two separate locations, i also bring in foreign clients for walked up stuff so that would be the work i could offer a pointer, i also do most of the doe and hind cull myself during the late winter and early spring. no worry's about disagreeing with me that's why i joined, so as i can get other people's advice, experience and point of view. let me know your thoughts. cheers.
