Most successful way of getting big bags of rabbits?

Recommended Posts

I thought GT was as good a place as any to post this as it'll cover lots of interests from the various forums.

In your opinions, what's the best technique out there for one man to get big bags of rabbits?

Shooting?

Running dogs?

Snaring?

Netting?

Ferrets?

Trapping?

I don't want to add a poll because I'm interested in the thoughts of people, not just button pressing. One person on their own, day or night.

What do you all think?

Lamping with the rimfire, produces the numbers (Nothing beats it) , but not the sport.!

Crop-spraying plane, tanks filled with Zyklon B. LOADSA dead wabbits. Birds. Wats. Mouses. Pipple. Deer. Goats. Foxes. Owt that moves.

Kwl. Just let me get my NBC suit out the wardrobe . ..

Depends on the land, and how many rabbits are there :) but I would say if your good, snares, but then again longnets will catch loads if done right, and ferrets again will push out any underground, so it all varies, it is a pretty broad question.

Agree with joe it depends almost entirely on the land.

On rough ground ferreting with shotguns can be most effective whereas lamping may be fairly ineffective.

In well fenced areas trapping can decimate populations (especially drop boxes).

Running dogs although are good at reducing numbers and creating a viable healthy population aren't the most effective method in most situations. Although they are by far the most sporting and fun.

100 % down to the ground.

I.E ferreting is very successful, but not much use if the warrens are not really on your ground, or it is summer.

A mod'd rifle and night vision is a very lethal way of quickly reducing the rabbit population, if you are willing to put in a couple of long night shifts and have safe land to shoot.

As said trapping / snaring can also be very good and these methods are working when you are not there.

An ideal combination would be to go down one day or two, ferret and collapse / fill in, every burrow you can (collapsing etc optional), and set snares on every fence run etc you can, and then return over several nights with rifle and night vision and decimate what you can. Also allows you to scope out any areas of warrens you may have missed or warrens that have been re-opened.

A combination is always best.

But the easiest, quickest and least skillful method is rifle and night vision.

Dont think you could beat a driving about with a silenced 22. for the number game IMHO,

But...

Id much rather go ferreting and useing the dogs for the sport factor...

spot on  , ive gone out and had big bags with my dog Bryn. But if i had gone out with the above, i could have double the amount and quicker. Dogs+ferrets+ snares all will get good bags  , but not as good as gun no way.

HMR all day long , we sit in the same spot on top of a hill shooting down at the rabbits below and easily get 15 - 20 just from there , walk the rest of it (one field) and you could bag up 50 , the record was a 100 from the same field driven round twice on a quad
