dev 227
Didn't know it was on neil, probably would have went and took the child with me for the day out. Haven't been in contact with the lads since the boxing night Quote Link to post
fat man 4,741
A lot depends on the ground your working..ie.deep shallow and the amount of ground you've got to work. Also the type of terrier you work.Where i em from the game is well educated as a lot of lads diging the area so a bayer just would not be able to hold game till dug to so it requires a dog with that extra gear so dogs get laid up from time to time.We still average around 60.70 digs a season which is not bad but nothing near what the hunt lads are geting. deadlock 0
If your season is six months long then thats 26 weekends. If your getting 2 to 3 digs a weekend then that's roughly 50 to digs a season. That should be within most folks capabilities. However, a hunt terriermans season is 7 months long and if his pack is out twice a week then he should be working his terriers 4 days a week. Some packs do 3 days and there's one in Ireland that does 4. That's a lot of terrier work. IMO there's lads not digging 40 a season who's terriers are better than most. With them it's quality over quantity. Of the 26 weekends what about the times you only get one fox or ALL the BLANK weekends or weekends your busy with something ? add that together and say 23 foxes at home with lots of bolts = 13 digs........ dev 227
Not everyone gets blanks. If you only get 13 digs a season your not getting out enough or you haven't got much ground to hunt. Quote Link to post
deadlock 0
Iv got thousands of acres 12 different shoots some not lamped or snared plus small farm shoots plus my own two shoots , so it not the not enough ground trust me, so dev is that 93 foxes ? last season ? Quote Link to post

hunt 30
Was thinkin same dev a blank what's one if them ha ha we like to dig all the dogs in truck if we can granted a lot are easy half an hour affairs but we do have the odd big en last season we had two tens in a day an in Ireland we had a three followed by two over ten foot same day the gOod digs are the one you remember but you also remember the big number days also Quote Link to post
hunt 30
I'd say them lads probably would deadlock Quote Link to post
fat man 4,741
We usually bring 3 workers out on a day and dig the 3 of them most times or at very least we dig to 2 of them, there is days you will get caught at a deep one and maybe only get 2 digs.I dont like puting a dog to ground in the late afternoon as im not into diging in the dark.If we are in an area where the earths are near to each other and are nice handy digs then a dog might get dug twice so you end up with 4 digs.We have plenty of ground the only prob is there are other lads diging in some of it as well, not good when starting young terriers as they could be entered to quarry that has been dug before, and end up taking a beating.I cant remember when we had a blank day, long may it last. Guest dee mac
Deadlock I'm not trying to be a smart fella or make out like I'm some great digging man. I'm not but I do dig my dogs every weekend in winter and we average 3 or 4 digs a day. Its not hard to believe I know loads of lads digging those numbers i can vouch for dev on that every weekend spare day is spent out with dogs same as ourselves 3 or 4 digs a day maybe two next day think our best was 6 in a day and 11 in one week with a bitch having 5 digs in same week numbers soon clock up but its up early and out till dark and if there s something too ground and its diggable dog is in reguardless of depth no picking and choosing unless is young first season dogs after that its in you get and my digging mate loves the spots that most people pass by as they are nt tortured by every man and his dog so too speak . i aint blowing or trying too act like im something special as dev says loads of lads i know getting up into the 90 + digs but at end of day no point keeping kennell full of dogs to stand and look out window at them you need too get them out even if it dos mean wife not speaking butter sandwitches in lunch box all week and making your own dinner i always say i ll make it up too you in the summer Quote Link to post
