THE STIFFMEISTER 16,139
Deer grey cant stay enough to run 3 good winter hares , not saying they wont catch a hare , just not good at it ........ id match my deerhound/greyhound on any breed , its not the breed , its the heart , i have a little 18'' whippet which runs round colliexgreyhounds ect round this way , depends on how hard your dog works , my deerhound/greyhound would run hare after hare , not bigging myself / my dog up but i just know what my dog can do , you cant say deerhound x 's are useless , ect , they are adapted and can run any land , at end of day its all down to what dog suits you , same as i wouldnt touch a bull/greyhound , its all just peoples opionons Dale It is qoutes like this that make you wonder how much people have actually done Quote Link to post
Guest Top Chalker
Its not about what dog can kill a hare , its what dog is the best hare killer , if you took a deer x , collie x and ran it twice a week on good hares it wouldnt be long before they put the brakes on , iv seen it they just not up for it week in week out , most cant run 3 good hares , alot off the saluki dogs cant run 3 good hares , and they are naturall stayers , its like the stiffmaster says it makes you wonder just how much running some off you lads have done ????? Collie x and the deer x are usefull dogs , but not out and out hare dogs , there more suited to lamping , simple as that and i am prepared to prove it if any one thinks they got a real good one ?????? tod 3
saluki bred dogs are the ultimate running dogs for hares no to ways about it.they have been tried and tested over time thats why most coursing lads have them.all this arguing about what cross is best is mad.if your happy with your chosen cross thats all that matters Quote Link to post

witton 6
Dale you have made a very very bold statement, if deerhound crosses where better than saluki crosses all the coursing lads would be useing them.......but they are not. You need to open your eyes mate, there has been some very experianced coursing lads answer this thread, they no what they are talking about Have you ever consistantly ran day time hares through out the season? If you havent then who are you to say they are superior? David Quote Link to post

WELL TC , I THINK A LOT OF LADS REPLYING IN THIS THREAD DONT SEEM TO GRASP THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ........ RUNNING ON THE BIG LANDS AND RUNNING AROUND THE DOORS ......... YRS AGO ,,,,,,, AND I MEAN YRS AGO ..... I SAW THE FIRST SALUKI HYBRID THAT COULD KILL THE MAGICAL 3 OUT OF 3 , A BLACK DOG WHICH WAS OWNED BY HUGHIE WEAVER AND LOANED TO A LOCAL LAD , THAT SET THE LOCAL LADS AWAY AFTER THE SALUKI CROSSES ......... WE TRAVELLED HOURS DOWN TO BUY A BLACK BITCH , SAW IT KILL 3 OUT OF 3 ON THE CAMBRIDGE FENS .... BROUGHT IT HOME A FORTNIGHT LATER TRIED IT ON THE LOCAL HARES ......... IN THE NEXT TWO YRS RUNNING HARES REGULAR IT FAILED TO KILL A SINGLE ONE " LOCAL " ...... YET WHEN IN ITS OWN ELEMENT OF LARGER FIELDS REGULARY KILLED HARES IMO , YOU NEED A FAST , STRIKING DOG LOCAL THAT CAN JUMP WELL , SOMETHING A LOT OF HEAVY SALUKI BLOODED HYBRIDS HAVE TROUBLE WITH ........................ AS FOR D/H AND CUR CROSSES PULLING UP ? ........... WELL I HAVE TO AGREE WITH THAT ONE IF RUN REGULAR ON BIG LANDS , MAYBE THEY WOULDNT SHOW THERE COLOURS ON SMALLER LAND WHERE THE HARES LOST EASIER AND THE LUNGS AINT TESTED FULLY IVE OWNED A FEW MERLIN / EVE / LILEY HYBRIDS THAT HAD IT ALL AND COULD KILL HARES ANYWHERE .......... BUT THEY AINT AS COMMON AS SOME PEOPLE THINK ONE LAST THOUGHT BOYS ........................... THERES A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HUNTING AND COURSING ALL THE BEST DUCKWING Quote Link to post

inan 841
Wait for it,Next there's gonna be a collieX what can run over the 5 minute mark You said it!,and maybe it could ,in a fashion "rocking horsing",but could it do it again, after a 20 min rest? and could it catch a hare after a 5 min course?I like collie crosses ,Ive had a couple and Ive a pup with collie blood in it,but I didnt get him for Jacks,Dale is entitled to his preferences,as are we all but for big land the Saluki hybrid is unbeatable,How mant singlehanded competitions have Collie or Deerhound crosses won in the last 20 years? The collie types are at their best at the obedience trials and really shine in them, the Deerhound crosses are fast ,pretty versatile ,especially the bitches as they bring the size down.As we all know its "horses for courses" Quote Link to post

DUCKWING,if it's not the dog your talking about just tell me to shut up! Quote Link to post
