When we were kids late teens early 20s we used to go poaching fish in my mate's sister's little white mini she'd saved up to buy it, her old man had done it up and she'd still to sit her test and we used to 'borrow' it to go poaching. It wasn't taxed, insured and neither him or I had a licence. We used to fill the boot and back seat with salmon and take them to my house and fill the bath with them and by noon the next day we'd have sold the lot - local hotels and folk we knew bought some and we had a contact in Wales who'd come up once or twice a season and buy large numbers for £1 per lb. Two or three of our best customers were coppers - one of them was a neighbour - and they'd take them without question. We were coming home one morning with black bags filled with fish and we were hauling the bags into my parent's house when in full view of the policeman neighbour and mums taking kiddies to school one of the bags burst and around 8 decent fish spewed out onto the street. Not a word said - ever... Good old days eh?

Used to cycle up the river Cairn most days with a 16 strand copper snare hidden in the handlebars with the grips over the top, and an old jacket with two rips down the each side of the back, lurcher running behind, would snare a salmon, have a course at a Hare then cycle back down the road with the Fish in the back of the jacket.

Years ago my old man & his shooting buddy got caught shooting on national trust land with shotguns. Armed trespass they were charged with in court, but the magistrate gave them both absolute discharges because in his own words they were "Only shooting vermin!"

Same thing happened to me and two mates, two keepers jumped out on us took the car reg and reported us to the police, copper that came around said he had to follow it up as the local squire had got wind of it, Outcome was we appeared in court on a charge of armed trespass the local beak just said what the hell were we doing in court and dismissed the case giving the two keepers a bollocking for wasting their time. Found out later the keepers had brought a private prosecution as the police didnt want to know,

Just ANOTHER ONE= We were working down in Burnley, Paving the back streets, Narrow lanes,between the rear off the houses, Ripping up beautiful

granite setts,6" square, about 9" deep, Sell them I could not give them away, today's price must be 200 a tonne, I dumped at least 1000 tonnes, and replaced them with 4" of Asphalt paving, in those days the toilet was out at the bottom of the yard,((( called THE LONG DROP, we were busy relaying the base course, and my roller driver seem to be leaving a strip alongside the wall un-compacted,I told him to keep tighter to the wall save all the

whacker plate work, he said I cannae, keep tight or I will bring the wall down, I said give it a go and see what happens, the next thing he takes a bit of a wall out, and a fellow jumps out with his trousers to his ankles, can a Man NO have a SHITE, in peace, without some f--k-ng Idiot knocking his wall down, well Lads just one wee incident, but the same fellow kept a couple of dogs, terrier, and a Red,Greyhound, I got chatting to him about his dogs, he said the wee terrier was only about a year old, and the red grey, was just 2 but knock a Hare, only good for two runs,and he will definitely catch one out of the two runs, One Friday night, the same fellow come to me in the Pub we used to frequent,THE STANLEY ARMS, next to the Woodmans, up in Burnley wood, he said he was going to court on the coming Monday, and he expected to go down, for at least 3to 4 months for lack

payments to the court, and he asked me if I would take his dogs, as he did not want them to go to the pound,I said OK, I will take them and find them, a Home, the wee terrier was a beauty, found her a permanent, home to an old friend of mine, the Red greyhound, I kept he could race to a Hare,

and lift his quarry, he gave me great sport for about 18 months, and surprise he could carry back , but his stamina never improved, he could jump,

and one day I was out with him, he caught his Hare, and he was carrying back to me, he tried, to jump a 5 bar gate, with the hare in his mouth, and his back leg got caught between the 2 top bars, I eventually got over to him and lifted him off, the gate, carried him to the road, and just at that moment a milkman was coming along with his Transit float, and he gave me a lift to the vets, and that was the end of big Red, a Beautiful

tempered dog, that was around 1973/4 Burnley was some town in those days, The Cats whiskers, THE CRAIC WAS GREAT AND THE BURNLEY PEOPLE, FIRST CLASS,

Talking about old days, do any of you Scots Lads know a lad called Shug O, Raw I think he was from Belshill or Wishaw, did a bit of digging, I sold him a Beddy X Whippet x Whippet 25 years ago, always wondered if he was still around? i no shug he is still in bhill and does pest control

back when i started early eighties plenty of lurcher to lurcher dogs about worker to worker saw some very good dogs too. the beddie crosses were very popular. for the hares in my area a few of the older blokes[i was young then] had deerhound crosses and they could do the job.it was so much easier to get a run back then. peoples attitudes have changed to hunting with dogs and it certainly isnt for the better.
