NV Cobra Merlin + MTC Mamba? VS lamp?

Recommended Posts

Following some advice and having a chance to use a gun sporting the mamba's I've been intending to pick one up to accompany my AAS410K as well as potentially a lamping setup or NV, been intrigued by the Cobra Merlin GEN1 with DSA (£400) to accompany ether the 3-12x44RIR or 4-16x50RIR version (not entirely sure if it would only fit the x44)

Anyone tired/rate them with this sort of setup? worth getting vs the basic LEDRay GL2/$ setup? one more versatile than the other?

If your set on having a Mamba , then the best thing would be a lamp .

I say this because any add-on will considerabley increase the over all length of your scope , bringing it so far back it will be nigh on impossible to `shoulder` your gun comfortably and have the correct eye relief . The only two ways to combat this is , have a very short scope , one of the mini type , and a butt extension . This will still take a bit of getting used to , but its the best way . The only other stipulation i would have for an NV add-on , would be a side wheel scope . Having used NV and lamp for quite some time , i can only say that i would use NV , if it were a dedicated unit , on a dedicated night rifle . Add-ons can be a pain to set up right , and if the truths told their no better or worse than a lamp . The slight advantage a lamp can have is you can swing your rifle round the field and pick up eyeshine , where as an add-on would need to be `shouldered` to have the same use .

Lamp , does what it says on the tin , clip it on and your away , simples .

Cheers Buster,

Certainly makes sense, had a quick think about it with an AAS410k with a mamba, even as far forward it would be pushing it just a tad as said, had hoped to avoid a dedicated NV gun mind although that could be an excuse in future after a lamp ;)
