Terrier Sam 297
IMO there are the people that sell borders, plummers for 3, 4, 500 quid a pop but there are also the honest guys that sell real working stock at a decent price. Just like if you flick through a paper or on the net you will find people sellin jack russells for 300 quid but you and i know that you can still get em very cheap if not for free from huntsmen etc. Also FTB, whats the difference between a bushing terrier and a beating dog? A bushing terrier enters bushes and the like to flush out game/rabbit etc. A beating dog......exactly the same but the difference is, beating dogs as we know them (springers, cockers...) are soft mouthed for retrieving game. If the lad doesn't need if to retrieve game then thats that isn't it? Just my opinion, I may be wrong. Atb Sam Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
Spaniels and labs are tenfold more bidable and train able than terriers. Also once he gets into beating he may appreciate a dog that picks up. Any keeper worth his salt won't tolerate a wild dog. There is also an image attached with shooting and I know a few estates where you wouldn't be welcome with a terrier. Then there's the problem of telling it to kill quarry one day and leave it the next. Then what if it goes to ground? Has the line to wait for you to fetch a spade. I think that's reason enough. As I said. My opinion. FTB Quote Link to post

banjorabbiter 2
sorry I haven't made my self clear enough I only want the dog as a companion for shooting and will be taken beating just for exercise as on my shoot terriers are welcome. the main jobs the terrier will be used for is ratting ferreting and bushing. looking into a plummer or bedlington thanks for suggestions atb banjo Quote Link to post
Cleanspade 3,322
ive a couple of plummers. and fight the ban. my eldest terrier will do all the tasks with ease. sassy will work cover tirelessly. is a fair dog with the ferrets. and gun/lurcher. best nose ive seen in an age. she also gets the odd fox for me below ground. if i could only keep one terrier it would be her. a real sporting dog i would say a well bred plummer woud be just the job. and at less than the price of most terriers. delivered half way. you have to realise that the shite wrote about plummers is just that.......SHITE. oh forgot to say top notch ratters as well lol 1 Quote Link to post

As I said. My opinion. FTB I live in Norfolk now I have used fell terriers for beating for years on some top shoots(don't think Image is towards dog but some terrier men) why do terriers have to be wild (when I first meet frank buck he had about 8 terriers all loose all to a word Walking along river that he were bailiff on ) I have a agreement that I will drop out of line if we push fox to ground this is how I get permission in Norfolk & Suffolk as they don't pay me I am not missed but a bonus also my dogs will beat areas that most gun dogs will not work as for dogs not knowing difference between birds & fox please you ever had a dog come across snake did it run in & kill it I bet not . I would not take terriers on grouse shoot as they would struggle with cover so maybe you judging dogs on northern shoots ? No offence ment mate but my attitude changed when I moved south needs must  Quote Link to post
MAIN MAN 277
Most terrier crosses will do you mate but there only as good as there teacher! i would say spaniel x terrier a good hardy type and put plenty of time in to teach it, I onece had a black pat bitch she was as hard as they come but she made a great allrounder only because of the time i put in to her from a pup, (they never learn anything shut in a kennel me boy) all the best and let us know what you get. machine73 9
more useful suggestions cheers lads atb banjo Banjo, in the States you would easily find a good jagdterrier to match what you want. What you want to do with a terrier is exactly what I do with my jagds... well sand ferreting but add in hog hunting. They're good all rounders... not good a specialists... but that's why I hunt with them. They have really good noses and absolutely gamey. Try and find someone near you that runs jagds and see if they suit you. Sean Quote Link to post
