Vitamin Treat Paste

Recommended Posts

My misses went to pets at home the other day and got some Vitamin Treat Paste for Ferrets by Beapher.. basicly its got 2 colours in the tube that come out together.. one gives all the vitamins and minerals including taurine (w/e that is??) and the other helps the ferrets digestive system and stops them getting dodgy guts..

dont know if it works tbh but my ferrets LOVE it, i put small bit on me finger the other day and ive never seen them sit so still.. on me leg just licking away.

whats your thoughts on this stuff.. does it actually do the ferret any good or is it just a nice treat for them.

was nice of her to think of the ferets that she supposedly doesnt like anyways :p

Taurine is beneficial for brain/muscle development/communication in ferrets as it is an essential fatty acid that in used in neuron transmissions. It is also good for maintaining eye health. The product also contains biotin, which is good for their skin, hair, & claws.

well... I picked up a tube of that, ,,dunno why,, just saw it and having never used ferretone or owt,,thought,,"I wonder if they`ll like that",,, Jeez,,they go mental for it,, I used it to distract them while I hade them at the kids petshow, to take there attention of being petted by scared as f**k adults,,,,worked a treat,,

Wouldn`t give them much though,, they have a good diet and do`nt really need owt extra from it,, but for calming them doon or distracting them,,it`s a handy tool !!

yea mate they really do go mad for it.. like i say,, the misses picked up in a moment of rare kidness, i actually used it to settle them in the box today while i was cleaning the hutch out.. definatly a nice distraction for them ha.

and yea ive noticed they go straight to water afterwards.. maybes its a bit claggy in there mouth.. either way i would never use it as a replacement for rabbits.. defintly a nice treat/distraction/calmer though!

sorry Ideation i couldnt answer that question but i very much doubt it.

Can anyone tell me if this stuff ADDS anything to their diet that CANNOT be got from a natural diet?

Depends on what ferrets are fed as a 'natural' diet, doesn't it? Required quantities of certain essential vitamins, FFAs & protein aren't contained in every meat source.

It wasn't be being a smart ass, i would genuinely like to know? I feed a mixed whole carcass diet. I was just wondering what 'extras' are in the stuff.

Ultimately, there are no 'extras', just supplementary components, provided your ferrets are getting everything they need from their usual diet.

The Beaphar product is a complementary supplement/treat containing Taurine & Biotin, amongst other elements.

Taurine is an amino acid used in high demand by ferrets, it is a key ingredient of bile, which in turn is needed for fat digestion & absorption of fat-soluble vitamins as well as assisting with brain/muscle development/communication and the associated neuron activity. Excess Taurine is excreted via the urinary system and poses no threat to liver function, as fat soluble vitamins would, therefore it is difficult to overdose a ferret on Taurine. Taurine is very low in rabbit meat for example, and so a rabbit is not suitable for a 'mainstay' diet on this basis. Taurine is contained in animal tissue, but the quantities are variable and so are difficult to determine. As ferrets need 20% ratio of animal fat to their daily diet, Taurine is needed in high quantities.

Biotin is contained in very low levels from meat sources. The most valuable source of Biotin is egg yolk. The egg white contains avidin, which binds to the biotin in the egg yolk, rendering the biotin inactive. So the egg white should be separated from the yolk to have any nutritional value as a biotin supplement/dietary component. Biotin is a K vitamin and is also water soluble, therefore, again it is difficult to overdose a ferret on Biotin as the excess will be excreted rather than stored.

However, the malt element of the Beaphar product contains milk & milk derivatives, significantly, lactose. As lacose is a sugar, it not beneficial to ferrets, as sugars are associated with/may predispose to Adrenal Disease. It also contains colourings and preservatives.

As an occasional treat it is fine and may provide dietary benefits, depending on the nutritional diet your ferrets are already receiving.
