Ideation 8,216
Find a litter being bred out of two dogs that are shot hot at what you want yours to do, on the land you want it to do it on? Does that make sense? Quote Link to post
rocky1 942
Rocky1 why do you say get something with greyhound in it? Not being funny, ive got a sal/whip/grey :-) just purely wondering what your reasons are? To add that tough of height? just think it would a more a solid type for all terrain plus give it a few extra gears if need upon just imo Quote Link to post
darbo 4,776
Hi guys thanks for all replys and pics. Looks like bed x whip. Like the look of them, also the smallness is good as well. Now need to no about tempament of the above. Also trainability, also wots the top speed of a dog above. Thanks to all, very nice forum is this, loads of help. Matt a friend of mine who is now 70 was a beddie/whippet fanatic.i have watched a number of his dogs work over a 25 year period. i have also seen a number of beddie/whippets work owned by others.all these dogs could find/catch/mark rabbits.they had enough speed to catch healthy rabbits on the run.made very good ferreting dogs 1st class noses.very strong prey drive.in their elemement hunting up.very determined little dogs.prone to be a little headstrong.just plenty of patience and common sense needed on the obedience side of training as with most dogs.good vermin dogs seen them catch feather on occassion.the ones ive seen retreived well but some were hard mouthed.now i have only seen these dogs work daytime i have not seen one on the lamp so i cant comment.i have not owned one myself as i needed a bigger dog as my main quarry was hares pre ban. but if i would have just been intrested in rabbits it would be a cross i would have certainly considered.atb in your search. Spot on, I worked my Whippet X Beddy for nine seasons, brilliant Rabbiting Dog, 100 percent marker, excellent Ratter, and prolific pheasant catcher, also took the odd Hare became expert at catching them in the den, which i didnt like, and was a decent wee lamper, I also worked Whippet x Beddy X Whippet another good rabbiting Dog and Beddy x Greyhound, not as good as the beddy x Whippet on day Rabbits,i found the beddy x Whippets had better nose, but the Beddy X Greyhound was better on the lamp. skylab 0
Hi I'm new to the forum, name is matt. Looking in to getting maybe a lurcher or maybe a whippet. Only really after rabbits when it arises, not after no other quarry. Been doing a lot of Reading & on this forum. There seems to be a lot of debate on here, which dog is best suited for different jobs. After a bitch pup , no males! Not buying as of yet, will do research first, so not after a sale of pup as of yet thank u. Would a whippet suffice for what I need? Uneven cover, sometimes open fields, also waste ground near my local river. Have heard. Whippets have. Thin skin? Would maybe a lurcher do a better job? Don't want a to big dog, but needs to be able to catch rabbits when needed. Any advice would do and will take all answers on board. Keep it clean lads! Quote Link to post

NEWKID 27,591
Hi mate I've got 3/4 whip 1/4 beddy ( litter sister to troter58's) she's 12 mnths now and is turning out to be a good little rabbiting dog, worked with ferrets, done a lot of bushing with my Jack Russel and is coming on real nice on the lamp ( I know it's summer but I've had her out a few times to keep her ticking over and build her confidence). She's quick off the mark turns on a six pence and has real desire which makes her ideal for rabbits. She's built like a whippet and stands around 19 tts I've only got her for rabbits and I'm sure if she carries on like she is she'll be spot on. She's kept in the house and is a lovely dog all round good with my kids and really laid back, my biggest niggle at the moment is she's started to bark at other dogs she's quiet any other time, it's really annoying, I socialised her as a pup and she was fine just started for no reason. If I'm out with friends and there dogs for a mooch she'll do it for 5 mins maybe then settle right down. I hope you find a dog that suits mate martha at around 8 mnths Quote Link to post
