Scallywag 78
The usual advice in terms of the health of the bitch and pups is to breed her after she's two but no later than five (for her first litter). As people have said, if you're breeding her as a worker, you need to see how good she is in the field before deciding if she's worth breeding from and also what to put over her. If you're breeding her as a pet, then as others have said, there's an abundance of ok lurchers about, (plus some really excellent ones as it goes) in rescue already. Bear in mind that lurchers tend to have large litters so you're going to have to either find a lot of homes, or cull unwanted pups. I'm not against breeding, I bred my terrier bitch, but you have to really think it through and make sure you can take responsibility for the puppies you produce as a result. Quote Link to post
Guest dances
20 months and its had a few runs on rabbits! That's more then half the tossers on here Quote Link to post
Guest TERRIERCENTRAL
Do you really need to breed "just one litter"? Does anybody? A check round the net today gives: 59 lurchers for sale on Epupz 115 lurchers for sale on FreeAds 276 lurchers for sale on Preloved Plus Sun local 105 lurchers for sale on Pets4Homes 26 lurchers for sale on Adtrader 294 lurchers for sale on Oodle (Scotland only) 875 dogs, roughly. Ok not the most scientific way of doing it but however you look at it, that's a LOT of dogs. Enough, already. Then there's all those for sale on specialist sites like this; the "known name" line breeders; ads in newspapers; sold or given away amongst mates and sold to "blokes in pubs". Then there's all those dumped, straying, and in pounds, shelters and rescue. Quote Link to post

Maybe it was just a question but theres to many folk just dying for there bitch to reach an age so they can breed and get pups, never mind if the dog is useless and the pounds are full of pups anyway.... Maybe a short sharp tongue lashing on THL might make folk think twice that pumping out pups is no the best way too go..... Quote Link to post
lurchergirl2 0
thanks iceman, I am so glad someone is able to read what i said and understand it as a simple question, to all others don't put me in the same catergory as people that are breeding for the sake off it, i am def not desparate for my bitch to reach breeding age so i can farm out loads of puppies, i have never breed before and think my bitch has potential to breed some cracking pups if i can find the right stud dog for her, i will think twice before asking any questions on this site again, its a shame as some of you are very genuine and give great advice and i love reading your advice to others, shame , shame Quote Link to post
lurchergirl2 0
Can i just ask, are most of you from america, the word pound is used by an awful lot of you???? Quote Link to post

And how do you know your bitch has the potential to have 'cracking' pups at her age? This is not a dig its a genuine question but it sounds like you've disreguarded any negative comments you've had to having pups but took on board any positive comments...... Quote Link to post
lurchergirl2 0
It is my personal opinion and i am going on her conformation and excellent trainablility, as i say it is my own opinion, i an possibly breeding from her to have a pup for my self and of course i would ensure homes for the rest of the litter first, as i say i may decide not to have any pups yet will see what the future brings Quote Link to post

She only asked when would be the best time to breed her bitch and instead off some advice she has to take that shit. She has a young dog there and by the sounds off it it will get worked and well looked after and further down the line she will take pups out off her and keep one back for herself nothing wrong with that. Only bit off advice l can give is if your going to breed your bitch down the line make sure you have homes before the litter comes because it can turn into night mare. And take most things on here with a pinch salt. Hate to see l any young people come on here and get advice they be out off the game before they have even started Quote Link to post
