lurchergirl2 0
Hi guys, we are hoping to breed just one litter from our bitch at some point, she'll be 2 in october, just wanted your thought on the best age to breed, we were planning to wait till our old 11yr dog is no longer with us do you think this is best?? although he could live another 5yrs possibly yet! so does that make it to old for the bitch?? Hope this makes sense!!! Also not sure what to put her to don't want a big pup she is 22tts and is 3/8 collie 5/8 gh, husband fancies gh x dh, i maybe fancy bed/whippet, what do you suggest?? anyone got any good pics of bed/whippets. What type as she is 3/8 collie 5/8 grey, i would go for whippetxgrey, you still got enough collie there and the drop of whippet will drop the size down, you dont need the beddy. As the collie/grey/whippet will do all you need and still bidable Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
If at age 2, she will have had one working season, you should probably wait until the bitch is 4/5 and see if she has done what you asked over that time, and that you have homes for the rest of the pups, then fire on. As the collie/grey/whippet will do all you need and still bidable When you say 3rd season do you mean season as in heat or working season as the first if she's a 6 or 9 monthly bitch would be too early for me but if you mean after 3 seasons of graft which would make her probably 3.5 -4 years old that sounds about right. As for what you put over her lurchergirl that's down to personal choice and also if the bitch is lacking in certain qualities you would look to find a sire that has those. Quote Link to post
lurchergirl2 0
Thanks do you mean wait till after her 3rd season?? Our problem is we live in Scotland and have a lot of deer here, prob more deer than rabbits, don't want a dog that will go and desimate the deer population if you know what i mean!! I wouldn't even think about breeding unless its to improve your working line,if you work them. If you don't work them..........then go to hancock's and buy another pup from there, theres enough rubbish around without you adding to the problem and breeding from more non-working stock. If you do work them and like I said it improves your blood then I'd personally wait until the dog as proved its worth in the field.A dog worked regularly "should" be proven by 4-6 yr old imo. Gaz_1989 9,539
Is this a wind up? Do you work your dogs? Quote Link to post
lurchergirl2 0
Try to v difficult here since the ban, and more than your lifes worth to be bringing all the deer down, rabbit population has declined alot after 2 very bad winters, impossible to get any permission to lamp! why are folk getting a bit tetchy about this!! Why do you think its wind up?? Its a ligimate question! Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
I thought it was a wjnd up because a) you are wanting to breed from a 20 month old bitch and you don't mention what you want from the breeding. ie) she lacks take off speed so add whippet, she lacks stamina so add saluki. Original post just may be badly worded. You need to asses what good and bad assets the bitch posseses and why she is worthy of breeding off. You give the impression that since the ban you can't work your dogs much due to deer population or whatever, so how much work has this 20 month old bitch seen? Gaz Quote Link to post
Fabapocalypse 35
Do you really need to breed "just one litter"? Does anybody? A check round the net today gives: 59 lurchers for sale on Epupz 115 lurchers for sale on FreeAds 276 lurchers for sale on Preloved 105 lurchers for sale on Pets4Homes 26 lurchers for sale on Adtrader 294 lurchers for sale on Oodle (Scotland only) 875 dogs, roughly. Ok not the most scientific way of doing it but however you look at it, that's a LOT of dogs. Enough, already. Then there's all those for sale on specialist sites like this; the "known name" line breeders; ads in newspapers; sold or given away amongst mates and sold to "blokes in pubs". Then there's all those dumped, straying, and in pounds, shelters and rescue. 6 Quote Link to post

Gaz Hi Gaz, sorry if i badly worded my question, no do not intend to breed from her at 20mths no!! that would be mad!!, just a thought for the future, haven't really done any work yet due to aforementioned, she has had a run on a few rabbits and shows excellent pace, turn and nose, what i want as we all do is excellent obedience, my bitch is still in training but going well. Would love to see her work properly but as i said very difficult up here. Quote Link to post

What i meant on my thread , is at 3rd season = 3 years old she is mature physically right, if you wanted to breed . But as these are working dogs (lurchers, gundogs, terriers,) you need 4/5 seasons to really test both sire+dam Quote Link to post

We were kinda thinking that age, as i said before wanted to wait till the old dog is no longer here, but he may well be when she is 4/5yrs old Quote Link to post
