SNAP SHOT 194
lofty wiseman if i could choose him, failing that ray mears, has more knowledge and is less of a drama queen, bear would have you eating a dead goat of 2 months, but ray could make you a feast from generally most stuff around him... Hannah4181 260
I'd survive for months on end with Bear . . .. just staring at him would get me through! :icon_redface:
comanche 3,033
I would'nt like to argue with either of em. Ray would be my choice though . I met him once and in the few minutes of conversation he came across as a self confident sort of chap with a bit of humour about him -not at all pompous. Bear comes across as as bit more gung-ho and more of a showman-fair play to him it makes him a living and I read that recently a lad in America got himself out of a sticky situation by remembering something he'd seen on a Bear Grylls programme . Ray is more than a survival expert . He is a wilderness living expert and there is a difference . Stick with him and you'ed end up with a comfortable existance rather than roughing it in an ice hole and eating on a hand to mouth basis praying to be rescued with Bear. I guess Ray Mears,Bear Grylls and John Wiseman's programmes do have to include a little "artistic licence" from time to time for the sake of spicing up the presentation but I bet they could all do it for real. Who remembers the Scene when John Wiseman was talking to group of trainees and had just said something along the lines of ,"In a survival situation you must stay alert and sieze every oppertunity ." He broke off to dive into the grass and come up "struggling" with rabbit that has seemingly been squatting at their feet during the presentation. It had clearly been dead for sometime !. And I know the guy who sold him the £1.50 pocket knife he was so proud of . Edited June 23, 2011 by comanche

Though he did work with Ray Goodwin who is very respected canoeist . Never heard of ray being a bandit until this thread . He was living with a girl he met on one of his courses . it would be sad if she was the dead wife that has been reffered to .
DUCKWING 302
ONCE WHEN UP AT OLD SNAREMANS HOME A KID WALKED IN WITH THE SAS HANDBOOK , HE LOOKED AT IT AND STARTED LAUGHING ,. SAYING " FECK ME NO WONDER THEY CARRY BIG PACKS IF THEY TRIED TO TRAP LIKE THIS THE POOR FECKERS WOULD STARVE " ...... I WORKED WITH A RETIRED SAS INSTRUCTOR FOR TEN YEARS AFTER HE CAME OUT AFTER DOING A 27 YEAR STINT ..... HIS KNOWLEDGE OF TRAPPING WAS VERY LIMITED .....ANOTHER FRIEND AN OLD COLONEL WHO HAD SERVED IN WW2 WITH THE REGIMENT WAS THE SAME , OUT OF THE TWO ........... I WOULD HAVE TO GO FOR RAY MEARS , HIS INTEREST IN ABORIGINAL LIVING WOULD MAKE SURVIVAL POSSIBLE BUT PERSONALLY I WOULD GO FOR JOHN "PRAIRIE WOLF " MCPHERSON AND HIS WIFE ..... ONE THING I DID ENJOY RECENTLY WAS MEARS IN HIS PROGRAM NORTHERN WILDERNESS , THE BEST THING HES DONE I THINK ............... ALL THE BEST DUCKWING

kenny14 656
I don't mind either of them but there's always one thing about Ray Mears.... His clothing always looks brand new, clean, and pressed even if he's 'been out' for days
scothunter 12,609
i watch rays programmes dont watch bears though. in fact wasnt there a show where he was dragging that annoying tit johnathan ross around with it. you learn stuff from rays shows and most is done where we live or at least can relate to. bear likes to go abroad. the one show i really enjoyed was rays where the norwegian guys during ww11 blew up the germans heavy water plant, and evaded the germans. he has done similar factual history stuff all very enjoyable.
