fat man 4,741
Ok folks i have a patterdale dog that keeps loosing its coat, and i mean practically bald.Ive had him to 3 different vets, spent a shit load of money and still no different. He will come perfect, lovely full coat and jumping with health, then he will just go dead in himself and loose al his coat again. He has been tried on every type of food i can think off incase it was a protein thing, and he has never scratched or tore at himself.I have tried at least 6 different washes including sheepdip but to no avail. The last vet and she had tried everything, told me it could be a stress disorder or a form of alapecha,i probably spelt that wrong, anyone ever have this problem, all advice welcome. A mate of mine had a terrier once, lost all its hair almost overnight. No scratching same as yours, he treated his dog with sudocrem ( babys arse/nappy rash cream) antiseptic, healing cream with a hint of lavender oil or something in it, he said it seemed to help his bitch, although she looked a bit odd for a while, but she smelled lovely !! hope it helps

chook1 184
You could try kelp (seaweed)- it helped my bitch when she started with seasonal alopecia, always found it better to give the powdered form, you can get it from any health shop or horse feed place, but make sure its pure. vld 62
Thanks for the reply's lads,i have tried the ointment but will give the seaweed a try, cheers again lads. Lurcher had bald nose and patches on ears and back legs - like you I tried everything and spent a fortune in vets. Was recommended raw diet with boiled rice and teaspoon of kelp powder in it. Within weeks there was a marked improvement. The hair on nose grew back for the first time in 4 years. Its getting better each day so I would say give that a go, worth a try? chook1 184
It works quite well even without feeding raw i couldnt feed my bitch raw, tried her on it and she just developed collitus(sp) she was given the seaweed with just normal kibble, she was on it for about 4 years till i had to have her pts this year, never had a problem with her looseing her coat again. chook1 184
Theres no such thing as a stupid question - we are all learning all the time and the easiest way is to ask It was put over her food, my dogs have water added to their food, that way they dont over fill on water after eating dry food, so its mixed in when i add the water. Cold Ethyl 63
Dorwest herbs do a seaweed type mix i used it on my lurcher and it works wonders he gets baldy bum syndrome and loses it round his thighs bum obviously and neck and ears ect works a treat not that expensive either when you see how much you use
scalesntails 118
Is it possible that the dog is pulling out its own hair? Is there hair loss in areas the dog can't reach? I assume that mange etc have obviously been discounted. So possibly a stress, allergy or diet issue. Are there any environment changes that bring it on? e.g. more time in kennel etc.
