Me and my shooting buddy shot 2 on our last trip out, with my air ranger and his R10, its all about shot placement, as is everything in this sport, we could of shot 5 or 6, but one each was enough, as long as your sensible with the numbers you take, then i see it as fine, some might disagree, but i do take the odd one for the pot.

If yo're shooting one now and it's milky, look about for the leveret sitting somewhere close in the grass. I know a lot will call pest control, and if your over run, fairs fair, but at this time of year, for me, if you shooting hares, one of the countrys most impressive and special mammals, you got to have a pretty good reason. Not wanting to start an argument.

As Jai said,,

Leave well alone in the summer,, Hares are a bit special. Taking one for the pot is fine,, or if they are causing a real problem then I suppose it has to be done, but shooting one just for the sake of it is not something I would agree with at all.

if you really want to see a good reason for respecting hares,, go out in the winter to see them,,with a lurcher :whistling::whistling::whistling:

I wouldn't recomemed shooting hares with a sub 12ftlb air rifle but that me, there is no law on it other than you can't sell them from 1 March and 31 July, they are a fantastic animal to watch and its estimated that there is only around 750,000 left in the UK

I'd agree with Jai and Rake

Unless there's a good reason to shoot them, leave them be. They can be shot at sensible ranges with a sub 12ft-lbs rifle just the same as rabbits. Their boddies may be bigger but their heads aren't.

Cheers.

we have a shoot on sight policy round here , we never get the numbers down as they just keep coming in from the flat lands , i personaly like to see them about but had some good nights shooting hares.

yes an airrifle does kill them just as quick as it would a rabbit , just head shoot em

Im sure most know my views on shooting hares, basically the same as ideation and rake aboot. I have no problem with the actual shooting of them where there are sufficient to warrent it but i dont agree with killing them with whatever method while they have young on the tit. Like most things it depends on the situation, populations vary in different locations and so peoples views vary accordingly.

A 3/4 grown leveret what most folk shoot this time of the year do only have rabbit size heads, but a fully mature winter hare has a head nearly twice the size of a rabbit, personaly though i wont shoot the worlds greatest athelete as i think they deserve better.
