Ferret squeaking? Is he ok?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I was looking for a bit of advice off you lot as you will undoubtedly know more than me. I've got 2 hob kits, theyre around 11 weeks old just now. One of then has always been a noisy little bugger compared to his brother who is quiet. Now I was handling him before and he seems to make this 'squaking or squeaking' noise every now and then. It's hard to describe. I can't be 100% if it's only when I touch him as he is noisy anyway. I've examined every part of his body for tenderness and pain and there's no particular area that I can tell that is sensitive. I'm no expert and I hadnt really noticed a change but my girlfriend seems to think there might be something wrong with him. Earliest I can get him to the vet is Thursday due to work and if I thought it was an emergency or he was Ill etc I would have him there now or in the morning. I will take him on Thursday anyway but I was wondering if anybody could advise me on the best action as I don't want the little feller to come to any harm because I'm relatively inexperienced. Thanks for you help. I will take your ripping's on

The chin!

It's like a squaking noise mate. I suppose it might just be like a seal noise. Maybe would explain it as he was squeaking when I carried him up the stairs to get something and when I sat down and he was chilling out walking over the bench etc he didn't make it- ( maybe he had calmed down and relaxed)? It's similar to the noise he makes when he's happy like the chattering noise but a bit more louder and forceful if you get me

If it is a sort of hissing noise, that is a fear noise. Some kits are just more fearful of new situations than others, just like some dogs are more timid. All you can do is handle the kit a lot, and very gently. Providing it is eating, drinking and crapping OK I would imagine that the kit is OK, just scared in new situations. Don't forget that ferrets have poor eyesight, but their hearing and sense of smell is brilliant. So expect a bit of confusion and fear if it hears new noises or is exposed to strange smells. They just need socialising just like a young puppy does.

Thanks for the replies. It's put my mind at rest, I will still go and get him checked out on Thursday just to be 100% sure. I was worried that maybe he had a bone stuck it something to that effect but like I said, he had always been noisy since I got him at 8wks. Would it be possible for something to be stuck in his throat or does that just sound daft? Thanks

I really don't think you have much to worry about. If he had something stuck in this throat you would know about it. If he was in pain he would be biting you when you handled him. My ferrets sometimes make this noise too. It's a bit like a dog whining to get something/over-excited/keen to get on with things, but the ferret version!

If he is otherwise happy & healthy, don't worry. However, great you are concerned enough to have him checked over by a vet. I'm sure that will put your mind at ease, better safe than sorry! Let us know how it goes. atb

me and my mate bought a pair of hobs from the Welsh Game Fair a few years back. His must have been the runt of the litter or something because for the first few days he squeaked when he was hungry, when he wanted company, etc. He squeaked that much my mate ended up naming him 'Victor' after Victor Meldrew!

It's very similar to the chuckle but different. I really can't describe it. I'm no worried now though. Like I said, he's fine, healthy, eating well and active so there can't be much wrong with the little stinker

Try throwing a wee ball in......if it starts clapping and balancing the ball on its nose you've been done...... :whistling:
