I have 7 dogs and like to try and give them all a go. Del Megan. You've had 28 foxes with her last season or in her whole working life? BAD BOB 27 Posted June 21, 2011 Report Share Posted June 21, 2011 gonna have to call B.S on bobcats being tough,yes sharp claws,and teeth but great big pushovers most flee than fight and the ones that stay and do battle lose with a terrier of any grit. they are light skinned and give up the ghost easily compared to a coon. 1 Quote Link to post

I think a bayer will suffer much more than a hard dog. I can't claim I've ever gotten a bobcat in a hole. I'd still be nervous to put one of mine on one despite what I've heard about them being broken easy. Quote Link to post

I was given him because of his worrying and worked him a fair few times but he was far too hard for me. Guys on here that know me know that i keep Russells and most of mine are bayers, I have no place in my kennels for nutcases, I want them all to get along and do what they are bred for not to have them in sick bay everytime they go out. The sums are correct buddy. 28 in 6 years as she didnt go til over a year and she isnt 8 yet. What i should point out is that i dig approx 30 foxes per season with our pack. I seldom go out at weekends now like i used too unless its to do a job for someone having problems or on a rescue. I have 7 terriers and like to try and give them all a go as well as having to bring on hunt terriers. A few guys from here are given the opportunity to work their dogs with me during the season to get them going. I am in no way an expert in the terrier field but like to think i have dug my fair share throughout my career with dogs. Probably dug more than a few on here. Perhaps someone on here can quote how many foxes one must dig with their dog before its classed as a proper working terrier. Some might knock wee Megan as she will bay away and on most occasions she will come out after an hour or so to see if im still there and then go back in again but this suits me fine. Some will say, jibber, nae guid, get rid etc, what a load of tosh i say. If a dog does what you want then you can ask no more from it. What i must point out is that i always enjoy working my terriers, yis Del. TBH mate I'd rather give 2 or 3 terriers plenty of work rather than very little work to 7 terriers. Different people have different standards, mine won't be as high as some of the lads on here but if that bitch was mine she would've been backfill the 2nd time she walked. Digging for an hour only for the bitch to come out giving the quarry a chance to move & have to start again is not my idea of successful terrierwork. Not having a go mate but I hope the dog you have advertised for stud sees a hell of a lot more work than your bitch has. Each to their own & good luck with your dogs 4 Quote Link to post

In fact I wouldnt keep one if it was only fit for 3 a month. 30 foxes a season can easily be done with one experienced terrier and maybe a youngster coming along. They are seriously tough animals and they have razor sharp claws that come out like lightning. Buster managed to bay this one up untill the hounds came. Even one on one with a fox hound, these critters are mean. He got 3 during my two week trip and when i left, the guy was over the moon with him. He sent old Buster to the vet for 3 days to have semen taken off him to be frozen coz he was so happly with the way he worked. Buster has sired a lot of pups in Georgia. Sometimes wish i had kept him but he was far too hard for my use, Del. Hi Del............i have very limited knowledge in terrier so bare with me please but if Buster was too hard for you then why was it a cracking baying dog in the USA. Has it learnt quickly what its dealing with in these Bobcats?.... Lab, if you ever get the chance to see a bobcat in action then please do and you will realise that very few dogs on earth will mix with these beasts. They are nothing like a wee domestic moggie. They stand about 18" at the shoulder and are quite capable of beating the crap out of a full grown fox hound or a half decent lurcher, Del. what i think lab meant was if a dogs too hard for fox how is it not too hard for bobcat? surely it would be safer mixin woth a fox than a bobcat? FightTheBan 1,147 Posted June 21, 2011 Report Share Posted June 21, 2011 Probably 50 ish head of game per season, dug and bolted between 1 7 year old russel, 1 young(which is no longer here) dog and I had to loan a third terrier last year for the first couple of months. Season being sept-early march. I dont count cubbing as being in season. I have a better kennel set up now than I have in previous years. My limiting factor is terriers not game. ATB mate. mickyatch 37 Posted June 21, 2011 Report Share Posted June 21, 2011 i personally find a terrier should have to do enough to get the job done ... if the dog comes out and it moves obv your not gonna be pleased ... but if it piles in and ends up in the sick bay for weeks on end thats no very pleasing either ... but its aslong as you get the job done if you can go a whole season without your dog taking much stick and still account for plenty of quarry why complain same goes if ya dog gets a few marks ... aslong as its doing the job ... theres two extremes in my eyes a dog that will fly in and get battered and just not give up and a dog that will go in yapp for 20 30 mins then give up ... if you get a good mix of that i feel you have a half decent dog ONLY MY OPINION LADS dont jump on is for it thanks atb atch Quote Link to post
fat man 4,741 Posted June 21, 2011 Report Share Posted June 21, 2011 K9 why would you put a terrier in a situation where it is impossible to dig to it.Thats ok if you have a dog that can finish a job without been dug to'but to enter a terrier that cant is silly imo,ok grand if you can call it off after an hour or 2 when you see that a bolt is not on but other wise its just a waste and if your dog is a mixer its just taken stick for no reason.
