Ideation 8,216
Just wondered if anyone fancied telling the story of their best ferreting trip? Or best last season? Or just one that sticks in your mind? Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,216
I know what you mean mate, some days it just goes like a routine, dog marks, nets on, ferrets in, rabbits out, and on to the next one, repeat. And other days the first hole takes you fecking hours for one bunny. That don't sound soppy at all mate, must be the best feeling ever. I had a couple of nice days with young uns this season. First one - A friend of the family was round one day a long time ago visiting my parents and asked if i'd take his grandson ferreting for the first time, i agreed and promptly forgot totally. This season, i was in bed one cold day, after a long night before, when i was woken up by a knock on the door. Bleary eyed i answered, to be greeted by the old man and his grandson, a sullen youth of about 13/14. The grandfather promptly dumped the kid and left. A brew later i loaded the nets, ferrets and pup into the car, grabbed the kid and set off. I really wasn't feeling on top of my game, so decided to try and get at least one bunny in some local paddocks and a scrap of woodland and then ditch the kid and feck off back to bed. Anyway, about 3 mins in the car and we were there, let the pup go, and set off down the hedge, pup marked straight away, and it went from there, in rapid time we had 6 bunnys in the bag, and the kid was no longer sullen, and was asking questions right, left and centre, and beaming like an idiot. We decided to try on last set on route back to the car, around an old stick pile, i tied pup to a shovel, with his lead as he was getting in the way, it being an awkward set to deal with, i took him several meters back into the wood. I stuck the kid up the top by the fence that divided the wood from the paddock and i went below the wood pile out of sight, in went the jills and after some thunder out came one bunny my side into a net, one up top that the lad jumped on. . . . . then quiet. I could hear a ruck in the woodpile so climbed in to pull out ferret and bunny, bunny bolted at top speed, past the lad, and me and past the pup, i saw him wrench forward once, twice and then out came the spade. . . . last thing i saw was pup, trailing the spade and lead, go tearing through the wood and straight between the two barbed wire strands of the fence. Then a few seconds later the kid pipes up "ummmmm jai. . . . .. he ummmm . . . he go it", what you on about i'm thinking, i assume he means he ran it to ground or something, and when i get to the fence, what do i see? Pup looking like he's one the doggy lottery, swaggering back across the paddock with his first rabbit dangling from his mouth, the lead and spade still trailing behind All in all a very happy hour or so out. tote 856
Nothing soppy about that Dotty. I've had some good days over the years with decent numbers but last year I had a few days out with my sons and they meant a lot more to me. The middle boy doesn't really have any interest in ferreting but he tags along occasionally, the eldest goes it alone a lot of the time and the youngest has taken to it like a duck to water and talks about it for days after a trip ferreting. He's even told his teacher at playschool that he has baby ferrets and offered to take them into class to show them. The teacher has other ideas however so I've got the job of getting some photos developed so he can take them in. Some pics from last season. Quote Link to post
