NO........527...Is the benchmark in my opinion.... Unless you get something older like a Anschutz or BRNO Fox.

I have a 527 for fox and vermin, love it to bits, the bigger guns get left in the cabinet more oftn than not unless Im specifically stalking.

fox out to 200 with a flattish flight path, using 35gr vmax home loads with 13 gr of 'lil gun.

vermin out to the same, may be a bit further on rabbits, no sure I dont have a range finder, and it does drop off quite a bit after that, but still has plentof enrgy left.

If I were you I'd get a .223 instead, firstly Hornet rifles are hard to find, but .223's are ten a penny, and if your on a budget then that alone is worth the change to get the choice, ammo is easier to get for the .223' every gunshop in the country has .223 on the shelf, not so the Hornet. The FAC grant is on a par so if you can get a Hornet, you'll get a .223.

Anyway the .223 is superior in all aspects of performance, so it's a 'no brainer' really, as for reloading, if you haven't had a centrefire before you will be stunned at the cost of factory ammo(typically £0.90

to £1.20 A SHOT), the Hornet has a very fragile case, which can be an expensive hobby if you scrap too many off during your 'recycling', however the .223 is robust and easy to reload.

That said the Hornet is a very nice cartridge and some of the standard rifles you'll find are very nice i.e. Anschutz and the BRNO Fox, but realy the Hornet is best consigned to history and enthusiasts, Like vintage cars very 'pretty' but a pain in ar#e to us as everyday transport.

Hi mate, I have a ruger 77/22 in .22K hornet, its the dogs bits :victory: i also use a .223 but have shot many more fox with the hornet!! don,t be put off when people say about the hornet not being accurate, or fiddly to reload, or expensive it,s all a load of nonsense IMO.

Spend some time finding the round to suit your rifle and they are as good as any other calibre. i reload using 40gn blitz king heads, 12.6gn Lil-gun powder, cci small rifle primers i think they do about 2900 ft/sec and are good out to 200yds drop foxy on th spot  My mate uses a cz and these are also a good piece of kit, but i prefer the ruger because of the 6 shot mag, and i can fit in a round with OAL of 1.8" ( this would not fit CZ mag )other plus points-- No recoil, very effective when moderated,& cheaper on powder

I will admit that reloading is a must with this calibre

Hope this helps.
