Clare 33
when you mean running ahead do you mean he is buggering off or is he staying 30ft around you, buggering off back to basics, 30ft just need to work on stop whistle and hand signals to get him working in pattern Quote Link to post

pegleg33 134
Back to basics i'm afraid First off, heel work on the lead and throw a little whistle training in along the way with some sit and stay.Don't let him run free while you're walking him, if you want him to have a crazy 5 mins stand still and let him have a run round.Don't let him carry on hunting for himself while out walking because this is the problem, he's realised it's more fun doing his own thing.Once you're happy with how he's progressing move him on to some steadiness training, sit him down and throw dummies around him and tennis balls past him.Once he's rock steady and you've got him doing what you want him to do take him onto some heavily scented ground, no scent is useless as as soon as you take him onto some scent he'll pull away. With the lead still on and the wind in your face cast your dog off to the left or right (i use the words 'seek on') wlak 5 yds to your left/right and then pip your whistle to turn your dog.If he doesn't associate the pip with the turn just give him a light tug on the lead and then set off in the other direction this time 10yds and repeat the exercise.Once he's got it on the lead try him off the lead, if he buggers off and does his own thing chase him down and drag him back to where he ran from and put him back on the lead.Get him working right again on the lead, you could also try wrapping the lead around his kneck so he can feel it but your not actually holding it.If he's reluctant to enter cover once you've got him working a nice pattern, let your dog work the opposite side of the cover and without letting your dog see you do it skid a tennis ball/dummy/rabbit/bird along the floor into the cover. As soon as your dog comes across to the cover side your dog should wind the ball/dummy/rabbit/bird and enter the cover. hope this helps, if there's something your not sure on doing just ask pegleg Quote Link to post
