The Super Ten Flies...

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I had a surprise, had a phone call when I was at the permission yesterday evening, Mary asked me to meet her at the top of the permission, she said she had been in a small shunt in the car, someone had bashed the rear. So I pondered round, not sure what to expect, well there was no damage so I asked her what the game was. She said look in the boot, and lo in there was a gun bag.

Now she bought me the Ultra, single shot, which is an ok gun, I just hate that stupid reload system. Press switch, bolt shoots backwards, load pellet, push bolt forward, then cock the gun, then fire. Fiddle after fiddle. She told me to open the gun bag and there inside was a Super 10 rifle. Mark 3, in good condition too. She said "Take the scope off the Ultra and put it on there, I know you are not happy with that gun you have, I am going to sell it!" Well I was not going to say no. So I took the Ten back round and played swapsies with the scope and got it set up. She then told me she had chosen a name for it,

This evening I got to try it out. Went down to the permission and set the scope up again as I changed from the standard silencer to a BSA volumetric one. After re-zeroing at 30 metres I then had a little walk round. Got a line up on a small kit, from standing position, shot and it dropped. First taste, very nice, just what I remembered! Going down the track I saw another kit and got another shot off, once again the pellet flew straight and true, then the heavens opened! Got back to the mobile Mole bunker and got inside. We have a Gelert Quickdraw tent, damned useful that, instant shelter. Well the heavens opened and flowed freely so Mole refuelled and waited.

The rain stopped and I set off round the permission again, down the track I went up the nettly knoll and spotted some big rabbits in the bottom end of the paddock. I got down but did not duck as I got close, so they saw movement and gave it heels. Damn, damn, damn! I turned round and saw a Mel Gibson (Bird On A Wire). There is a run of 3 11kv cables going across the permission and halfway between two poles sat Yankee Doodle pigeon, grimly holding on in the strong breeze that was blowing. I was able to stalk up to what I guessed was 30 metres, raised the rifle, got it in my sights and fired, it plunged downwards, then I had a semi tragedy! it plunged into the blasted nettles. These things are 4 feet high! Interspersed with ruddy great thistles. So half an hour clumping around revealed the corpse! I was happy, my first pigeon! New gun, new quarry! Feeling elated I wend back to the tent and dropped it behind the tent.

More rain meant more time sitting in tent waiting. The clouds passed, so I got out, back round the track and there was a group of large rabbits in the end of the paddock again. This time I kept low and got into range. Surfacing from behind the nettles I took aim and had a straight 15m shot, large rabbit down, so I got through the now live electric fence to retrieve the kill. Got back round and packed everything away, but not before noticing that the trees round the outside of the permission are all cherries! Loaded with them! So soon will be able to get main course and dessert from the same permission!!!
