for me the bebate is whether a true dogman is one whose A dog catch's lots of game or B has a good understanding of the dogs mind, and how to get the best out of it,

its possible for a dog to catch more game for a keen owner who's out more but might not be any more than a point and slip man ,,so is it the quantity of game or the qualities in the dog

A very good point: there are far more of A than there are of B. How many of the A's would know how to bring a dog back from bad injury, or failure if the dog has been over run and lost heart, or how to bring on a dog which might need holding back due to youthful over keen-ness, or one which might be put off if entered incorrectly, but in the right hands could do really well on a variety of quarry.

surely the man who catches alot of game regular is the one who has the best understanding of the dogs mind as he knows excactly how to get the best out of his dog.

you can have the fittest dog in the world. but he still has to be worked correctly because you can mentally f**k him in a short time when amongst alot of quarry.

I think they both play apart really but numbers arnt everything as some places have more quarry then others. I used to live by gloucester where a big bag would be common but now live in Wales and be lucky to get 10 does that mean my dog and I have lesser abilities in Wales ? no just not enough quarry to catch them

Absolutely mate ..your dog can have a bad day and do nothing ..you can feel like sh1te and your dog picks up on that and isn't the same animal. I've nearly all but had my time in field and the holy grail you seek isn't out there. Good dogmen have good dogs and if they get the best dogs then they shine . Bad dogmen get the best dogs and they are average to say the least. Trust me miracles don't happen with dogs and experience counts for everything inho. Get off your @rse's and go take your dogs out to catch ..i have done already today ..Have you ?

There is no such thing as a 'true dog man', just different folk with different approaches, attitudes, successes and failures, united by the fact that they keep mutts. Seen idiots with good dogs, good blokes with poor ones, and the rest of the spectrum. Seen good dogs have bad times, seen poor ones pull impressive stuff off. They and we are living breathing animals and folk often forget that.

Probably what hurts the process the most is the strange obsession with being 'seen' as a 'true dog man', or having the mythical 'allrounder' or any other pish.

SOME TIMES IN FACT A LOT OF TIMES THE DOG HIS BETTER THAN THE OWNER..THE DOG HAS NO DRIVING LICENSE, TO GET THE DOG TO GAME REQUIRED, I CUD CARRY ON AND ON AND ON, THE DOGS WILL NEVER BE PUT TO HALF THE TEST A WORKING LURCHER SHUD GET.....AND I AM NOT REFFERING TO NUMBERS

I'm extremely new to working dogs and have no experience at all so you can pay no regard to this if you wish, but I don't understand the constant need that alot but not all seem to feel they have to prove them selves to others , become or bee seen as a real 'Dog Man' , or own absolute word beaters or claim to own one , yes I'm sure every one wants to have the pleasure of owning a good dog that is a pleasure to watch work, and yes I suppose that a good dog will owe some of its skills to it's owner in the time and effort given to provid the dog with everything it needs to excel , but in my eyes if the dog pleases it's owner and provides you with enjoyment and pleasure of owning that dog and watching it grow mature and develop into a good dog that you enjoy watching and partaking in good days and nights out catching your desired quarry who cares if Jim down the roads dog catches more than yours ,or if you don't fall into the 'Good Dog Man' category , and I think it seems even more silly that some feel the need to compete with people on here that they will never even meet in the flesh

In my eyes a good dog and a good dog man in one that enjoys owning and working his dogs , has good strong bond with his dogs and nows their limits and is happy with his dogs regardless of how good the dog down the street is or the owner claims it is .
