Well had another couple of bucks booked with john yesterday evening and this morning. Anyway we went up to his land at pickering last night and sat up looking over a bit of freshly cut silage to no avail. There was one roe that we thought was a doe but john wasn't 100% sure as although it had not antlers it looked to potentially have predicels (spelling?) but it never presented a shot so no matter anyway.

However it was a very late night as we had to get back to johns then I had to get home from there and I wasn't home until 12.10 and was going to be up at 3 and my head didn't hit the pillow until 12.30. So after 2 and 1/2 hours sleep and an alarm that came just too soon I was up and on the roads again.

Anyway I got to johns for 3.55 (just) as arranged and we were on the way to his ground. So we parked up the truck, got breeze out and off we went. We'd hardly been moving for 10 mins when John spotted a buck where he'd seen a different buck before as he was expecting a yearling 4 and this was a big 6. anyway he appeared to be looking for a way out of the paddock as he was going up and down a hedge looking for a gap and after about 15 mins he started walking towards us. It was on.....Or so i thought. He stopped and headed back 20 yards short of where the backstop was sound  he circled the small bit of woodland and looked as if he was going to come up towards us giving another safe backstop. No such luck. He went back and disappeared, we assume into the woodland and after 20 mins decided he'd be laid up so we moved on to a different patch of ground. We had two choices sit in a high seat where I shot my last buck with him when the foxing lads had spotted a 6 point buck or go for a wonder on a different patch of the shoot. Always being one for a nice walk I opted for that.

So we parked up the truck and set off. We'd only been out the truck for about 3 mins and were about to round the corner and we heard a very strange noise indeed. It didn't sound much like any deer I'd ever heard barking and john wasn't too sure what it was and asked me if i thought it was a bark and i replied i wasn't sure as it didn't sound like a crow nor a deer maybe a cross between the two. Anyway as we rounded the corner there he was, looking in our direction 40m's off. Anyway gun on the sticks John said go for the neck and bang one deer down on the deck like a sack of spuds. Anyway he turned out to be about a 2 year old with a nice little 6 point buck and I was relieved to have him on the ground as it was deer number 10 for me and my experience is growing every outing.

Anyway thanks john and breeze for a couple of great outings.

Many of our bigger bucks go into the larder at 40lb + with about 4 a year being over 50.

So they put the weight in the body not the head.

Some would argue that is good genetics.

You measure a bull by the size of his off spring and not his horns.

Thanks for the comments i've cleaned up the skull and mounted it. He's got some real nice pearling on him and is a nice dark colour although both of these dont come across aswell in the photos as in real life.

      Hey Hunting Life Community,
I'm a professional hunter or a team member from Gunners' Review, and I'm excited to join this passionate group of hunters!
I’d love to hear about your most unforgettable hunting experiences. Whether it was your first big game, a hunt with an unexpected twist, or a day that taught you something new, share your stories with us!
      Here are a few prompts:
What made your hunt memorable? Any unexpected challenges? Gear or techniques that helped you succeed? Lessons learned or tips for others? To start, my most unforgettable hunt was in the rugged mountains of Colorado, where I tracked a massive elk through dense forest and steep terrain. The highlight was successfully using my GPS and spotting scope to locate and approach the elk without being detected. My trusty .30-06 Springfield rifle, paired with a Leupold scope, ensured a clean and ethical shot. The thrill of the chase and the satisfaction of a well-executed hunt made it an experience I'll never forget.
Can't wait to hear your stories and learn from your adventures!
      Happy hunting,

      Hello!
I'd love to learn more people's opinions on deer hunting using dogs, as it's a very controversial topic in the hunting world. I've only ever used dogs for grouse and waterfowl hunting, but many hunters also use for deer. I write a little hunting blog on the side for fun (this is not an ad, there is no ad/affiliate on the blog but let me know if I can't link!) and I really want to write about the dog hunting controversy.
What are your opinions? For or against, why, why not etc? No judgement, just trying to get the general hunting population's opinions!
      God Bless!

Trip last Saturday to West Sussex in that evil storm, flooded roads, crazy winds .
The usual warm welcome and off out to be dropped in a high seat.3o mins later saw a little white bum ,bins  up it's a  Roe buck Doe and fawn .
Shot the fawn ,nice size Doe and waited but the other  Doe didn't return to her fawn .Green out ,healthy gralloch .
Back to the Bothy, fawn in the chilled and bald bloke to local for a nice nosh.
5am already up ,tea and biscuits meet the other guests and out .Unsuccessful hour in a different seat and off on foot to see a massive buck 10m away. Took the heart shot ,he ran and dropped. This can't be right he was massive, this is a spiker.
Me tit, scope on 9 not 0 so at 10m he looked huge .Nice clean gralloch, and luckily the guide was with me as he was a fat boy to carry.
      Great weekend, good craic,great friends
