Col_c88 41
first of all sorry if this is in the wrong section.. i dont currently work dogs (damn lack of space and money) however... I have a 3year old patterdale terrier and the rule to get him was he is a pet..now that ive moved out of my parents i got myself some ferrets. now i go shooting and he has been with me just for the excorsize.. all the basic terrier instincts are there hes had a few rabbits that have bolted from bushes and even a squirrel some how o.0.. anyways i was wondering how hard it would be to train him to work along side my ferrets. he is VERY obediant for a terrier he wont budge unless i say so he comes when i call or snap my fingers.. im just worried he will get over excited and go for a furry little thing running around the floor rather than a rabbit.. he is currently sat in teh shed just looking at them and if i shout he will come straight out.. he has never jumped at them he just makes a whinning sound he makes when hes excited. hes had a ferret right up to his nose earlier and i just kept telling him to settle and stay and stoppping him from getting over excited. but what else can i do? ps:that is him in my picture avatar thing.. he has a big chest for a patterdale i believe but so did his dad one more question .. my Girlfriends westie is making a crying sound every time he breathes out and was sick 3 times last night after chewing some bone chew thing.. is it just a scratched throat? if so what can i do as its defintly distressing him..... either that or hes still feeling sorry for himself thanks in advance and sorry if that was long winded.. im crap at explaining myself Quote Link to post
Terrier Sam 297
Hi Mate. I would try and get him out and have ferret in your hand and every time he looks interested or goes for a sniff then deter him by either smacking him on the nose or shouting at him and do it over and over again. I don't know about anyone else on here but I have a russell bitch that I can use for rabbiting, squirells, rats and foxes and even though she is fine with ferrets up close, dogs eyesight ain't as good as ours and accidents can happen so if I'm out ferreting the dogs are on the terriers are on the leads when the ferret is down a hole. Hope thats helped. Can't help with the westie though. ATB mate Sam Quote Link to post

Terrier Sam 297
Wow. Whats your problem?! I think you misunderstood me there. "Smackin" may have been the wrong choice of word then (maybe tap/flick would suit you better?) but no one mentioned punchin anythin. You don't know me so you can hardly say that I'm an idiot. Nice to know that on a forum for people to talk about their hobby an help out others that there people willing to jump down you throat as soon as you get a word wrong. Some people eh Sam Quote Link to post
Col_c88 41
well just an update on my patterdale: i had the ferret on his nose today hes so well behaved i just kept making a noise that means hes doing something wrong (sucking through my teeth) whenever he got a bit excited.. the ferret seemed more bothersum than he did ha but good progress and an update on my Girlfriends Westie.... i decided to take him to the vet she gave him some shots for stomach problems.. i believed there was more than that as this morning he was sick again.. im no vet but im not stupid.. so i proded around a bit.. did a bit of research and rang the vet back telling her i think he has a blockage in his intestine..... within an hour of that they had him in surgery.. removed 5 bits of rawhide chew from his intestine and shes just rang me to tell me hes waking up.. my gf was crying at work today so it will be nice to see him when she gets home ... she really doesnt need the stress (pregnant!!)... so good news all around!.. and i knew what you ment when you said smack him on the nose.... just like when you prod a dog to take its mind of something. Some people eh Sam A DOGS NOSE IS MAYBE THE MOST SENSITIVE PARTS OF IT'S ANATOMY AND IS THE DOGS ESSENTIAL SENSE WHEN WORKING IN THE DARK, A FLICK OR TAP ON A DOGS NOSE WOULD BE LIKE A FLICK OR TAP ON YOUR GONADS AND WE ALL KNOW HOW SORE THAT IS, HITTING A DOG DOESN'T DETER IT, IT JUST ALTERS THE DOGS PERSONALITY. I agree that hitting a dog hard on its nose would change it's personality but when I said "smacking" in meant to give it a short sharp shock - as Col_c88 said, to take its mind off something. It was absolutely nothing to do with beating a dog or punching as you put it. I dont know about yours but my dogs dont stop doing something when you whisper sweet nothings in their ear. I admit I got my words mixed up - I would never beat a dog let along boast about it on an open forum - but you over reacted there a bit mate. Back on topic though, as I said, good luck with it all Col_c88 ATB Sam Quote Link to post
