Col_c88 41
wow ive not been here in a couple month my life has been hectic latley (my gf is pregnant=D) anyways... Im running out of rabbit for the ferrets and i cant go out for a shoot at the moment because ive damaged my foot and stuck with a pot.. then possibly operation which makes things a bit difficult. my mate has got birds and is gonna give me a few frozen chicks but i will only be throwing them in every couple of weeks (as to not let the feathers bother there throats etc.) what else can i use other than the high protein dog food stuff to keep them healthy.. i have been using rabbits.. throwing an egg in for them every now and then and uncooked chicken when theres some left over... im guessing mince would be another option? another question: how can i make some kind of run around for them in the garden while its red hot.. atm there in the shed and i open the shed door to let some air in every day all day (unless im going out or its lashing down)i have them both split up because there both males...i have 3 hutches.. 2 normal sized rabbit hutches fixed together with a run through and one large rabbit hutch underneath .. i dont have the luxory of loads of space like alot of you guys unfortunatly (or money atm)..im thinking they could do with a bit excorsize so whilest im on the sick i could build some kind of run around i can throw up in the garden for now.. any ideas on how or what? thanks! HarveyTheHunter 6
hello, i get into this situation alot with my ferrerts, so i just go down to my local game dealer where they have some lovely just shot rabbits spare. they have no head and no guts but fur and skin so that may be worth trying out. now about the run just make a smaller reclangular sourt of shaped run but not to small u will whant it about 6x4ft or a little but smaller if u like. but make sure u put things in their to keep them ocupied cause they like to run about and play with stuff so just cuck a old rope and hang it up then they will get some more exersize on that. well hope this helps harv Quote Link to post
Col_c88 41
thanks for the quick replies guys.. i might try knock up some kind of cheap "play pen" i can leave in the garden this weekend.. at least if it gets nicked or damaged it would only cost the price of the wood. thanks for the ideas about things to play with btw there both males and ive had to split them up.. there fine in the field when working they just crack on with it... but would they be ok to play together or would they just rag each other about again (one has a raggedy ear because i didnt know they would fight before) Quote Link to post

AlbionLass 2
If you have a poultry supplier nearby you may be able to get chicken carcasses, necks, wings etc in bulk, I buy carcasses in 5kg bags for the ferrets and dogs, I pay £1.50 per bag. You could also get some frozen rats or mice from most pet shops, they're great ferret food as they are whole prey items and a more balanced, complete meal. I feed my ferrets and dogs a mixture of raw chicken, mice, rats, fish, eggs, lamb, beef, pork (which is safe to feed these days as methods of rearing, slaughter and butchery are different and a ferrets stomach is very acided so parasites have a hard time to survive there), the occasional doc, offal etc. Edited June 15, 2011 by AlbionLass Quote Link to post
Jingo 6
my ferrets always struggle if cut their nails never known any to sit still unless use ferretone or some on their stomach to keep them busy, just get a grip of them so they know they aint going anywhere and sooner or later they get the message. just be careful in case they jump as ya cut the nail or might end up taking too much off. as far as i know any raw meat is fine apart from pork and for a pen i just use a few spars to make a skeleton frame wrapped in chicken wire just make sure ya check it every now and then as ive known them to pull at the wire till it snaps Quote Link to post
Col_c88 41
haha yea ive had to fix the hutch with the smaller ferret in twice now he rags at the mesh where his water bottle is. what about putting them together to play.. someone told me they would only fight if its in there sleeping area ... but i cant remember his exact words so it might "there both males there gonna fight" sort of thing..like i say.. totally fine out in the field Quote Link to post
Jingo 6
well ive got 2 hobs and i always keep them separate but one was 2 year old before i got the other. some reckon if their brought up together their ok others say never leave them together so theirs only 1 way to find out, try holding one and putting the other on the floor and see what they do if put near each other. guess their just like people all have different natures as for mine they'd fight any chance they get Quote Link to post
