tony d 0
Morning Everyone I've been asked to reduce the numbers in a friends wood, what do you guys think would be the most efficient way of using the traps? I was thinking maybe popping the fenns in a bucket of wheat etc cutting a hole in the lid and then putting the bucket up in the tree? Would this Be ideal do you think? Or I was thinking snaring? Many thanks Quote Link to post
tony d 0
Sorry forgot to add tunnels Tony Quote Link to post
nod 285
use a plank of wood as a lean to going up the tree, staple the fenn trap to the wood, then put tunnel over trap.. Quote Link to post
mickyatch 37
Personally when it comes to grey squirrels to eradicate them form a wood several opitions are needed .... Live cage traps for me are a must buy yourself one or two and deploy them at the base of well used squirrel trees. Pre-bait the areas a few days before deploying the traps so the squirrels become used to the feeding area ... bait you live cage trap and for bait i prefer nutella or peanut butter with nuts or sweetcorn ... cover the trap entirly with logs and leave the entrance open squirrels arent scared of traps but it saved other unwated attention. As for fenns mark 4's placed in wooden tunnels with a blocked up end and throw sweetcorn right through the trap also double open ended tunnels work beside trees or on logs or gateways. if you have acess to an airgun get out as often as possible and try to shoot some or you could use a shotgun all the best hope you get em cleared atch Quote Link to post

ferreterjohn 0
best way mate, tunnel on the ground at the bottom of oak trees, baited with wheat on the trigger pan, i dont know what this nonsense about putting them on the trees is a bout, it may work but not as efficient than on the floor seeing grey spend up to 70% OF THERE TIME ON THE FLOOR FORAGING and 30% in there drays, so putting the fens on the floor you have a 7/10 chance of catching one, and only 3/10 of getting on on the tree, when there going up to there dray. so if you want a better chance of getting a squirrel put them on floor atb john Quote Link to post

True the mk4 is approved but when you've come across a few squills ,albeit dead, and cleanly caught round the neck and chest but with their back feet braced against the trap as if trying to lever themselves free it is fair to assume that death was not instantanious . tony d 0
Thanks for all the replys lads, think the fenns in tunnels is the way I'm going to go. With the peanut butter etc is it enough to just put it on the plate or do I need a lot more than this to attract/entice them? Cheers Quote Link to post
mickyatch 37
might sound harsh lads but buying mk4's is alot cheaper and there approved so breaking no rules ill stick to what i know best it works for me it was only and opinion ya can take it or leave it Quote Link to post
