Entering young terriers

Recommended Posts

I dont think it does a young terrier any harm to have a look in a stopend, after al they have to know there's something in there worth traveling for.But in sayiny this i also think once or twice is enough as they can get to fond of the short end and not want to travel. Some will enter themselves more need a little encouragement, its al part an parsel of entering a young dog.JMHO.

Good reply!

Would you say that terriers that are on the larger size are harder started?

You no what i mean?less room to move, having to push himself into the hole?

I think its down to the mentality of the terrier, you'll see some that are tearing the sod of to get goin and others have to begently coaxed along.A large type will struggle to go in a small earth if it has no experience, where as a small one can travel through the tubes easy enough without having to push on or dig its way up to its quarry. We always try to pick the right earths to start entering a young dog, somewhere they will have no bother and where they can be dug to fairly quick for there first few outings,as they will come on in confidence big time with a few digs over them.I had a black dog one time that entered no prob on his own no stopending and would find no sweat its when we started to dig on top of him that the problem started. He would be there till you almost broke through, but when he felt you breaking through he was out,did not like the soil coming down on him.We soon realised what was wrong so dug behind him a few times and no prob, then start diging around him in the dig and after a couple of these he came around to the idea that the soil falling on him was not gona harm him.I think patience with young stock comes into entering a young terrier, and a lot of people just dont have it.I have ruined a couple of good well bred dogs over the years from not having the patience to hold them back, and others i did not keep long enough only for someone else to spend that extra couple of months and end up with a good diging dog.

Good honest post FAT MAN, as you said i think alot of people can become a little impatiant and become trigger happy. Like you said its a bit more to it than just sticking a terrier into a hole and expecting to dig over it. Spending a little time to see where you or the dog is going wrong then correcting it through a little time and patiance can be worth while.

thought i'd ask this how many lads let their terriers see their first quarry from the stop end or do you want them to enter completely on their own .i've been out with lads and when they have dug to a working terrier they have let young dogs to have a go when they lift the other terrier.i have let young dogs in after i have dug but only if they will travel from one of the original entrances but letting them straight in from the freshly dug hole will not do any good when it comes to finding quarry

trying a young terrier in a stop end to an already wound up fox is not good and could ruin a good young terrier show them plenty of dead stuff if they are bred right they will enter themselves they never forget fox scent

i wish you luck trying to get a dog to travel from one of the entrance holes after they ve seen a hole opened thats freshly dug

thats the same way i view it mate thats why i steak them at the entrance and dont let them see the digthumbs.gif

but why let the dog travel to a stop end thats already being dug? surely if he is keen to go then backfill andbringthe dog to a handy earth and let him self enter and dig the dog out. surely this is far better for the dog  i dont mind giving a pup a stop end but its the last resort id much rather get them to self enter by spikeing them near entrance holes while other do works

the hardest part of getting a terrier working is to get them to travel most terriers will tackle a fox but a terrier that wont travel is useless for ground work no matter how hard they are.i have seen terriers that seen a few stopends come out and try and enter from the hole we were digging not that they were'nt interested they just had a bad habit of entering straight into the stopend and i let them travel up to the stop end once only and they will not get it that handy anymore and when i do it i put a bit of a roof back over and give the dog a few minutes and then open up to him so in his head he's been dug to.and if a dog is willing to enter without ever seen a stop end well and good it will never see one but some terriers will work better if another dog has been in lets them know that there is something to go into

yeah thats a great way to get them going we should all get a dog to let the others know there is something at home and the rest can use there noses for finding there arses :icon_redface: and just a question does the quarry ever move on while hewaiting fr the dog to get to him after you put a roof back over it :whistling:

im talking about a young terrier that has seen nothing that i steak at the entrance so he can listen to what going on in the earth sure i have seen plenty of young terriers that would show no interest in an earth but when they hear another dog working it turns them on and they are in the earth the full lenght of the chain their on and when the other terrier is lifted place the graft infront of the quarry and cover the led with the large shovel its not rocket sceince and when the terrier reachs it lift the graft
