Entering young terriers

Recommended Posts

thought i'd ask this how many lads let their terriers see their first quarry from the stop end or do you want them to enter completely on their own .i've been out with lads and when they have dug to a working terrier they have let young dogs to have a go when they lift the other terrier.i have let young dogs in after i have dug but only if they will travel from one of the original entrances but letting them straight in from the freshly dug hole will not do any good when it comes to finding quarry

I dont think it does a young terrier any harm to have a look in a stopend, after al they have to know there's something in there worth traveling for.But in sayiny this i also think once or twice is enough as they can get to fond of the short end and not want to travel. Some will enter themselves more need a little encouragement, its al part an parsel of entering a young dog.JMHO.

i find that steaking them at the entrance so they can hear whats gong on makes them more willing to travel

Good reply!

Would you say that terriers that are on the larger size are harder started?

You no what i mean?less room to move, having to push himself into the hole?

Have seen a few that are fans of tipping their dogs in at stopends in a bid to get their dog some action when its already been tried & wont go and find for itself.

I think its down to the mentality of the terrier, you'll see some that are tearing the sod of to get goin and others have to begently coaxed along.A large type will struggle to go in a small earth if it has no experience, where as a small one can travel through the tubes easy enough without having to push on or dig its way up to its quarry. We always try to pick the right earths to start entering a young dog, somewhere they will have no bother and where they can be dug to fairly quick for there first few outings,as they will come on in confidence big time with a few digs over them.I had a black dog one time that entered no prob on his own no stopending and would find no sweat its when we started to dig on top of him that the problem started. He would be there till you almost broke through, but when he felt you breaking through he was out,did not like the soil coming down on him.We soon realised what was wrong so dug behind him a few times and no prob, then start diging around him in the dig and after a couple of these he came around to the idea that the soil falling on him was not gona harm him.I think patience with young stock comes into entering a young terrier, and a lot of people just dont have it.I have ruined a couple of good well bred dogs over the years from not having the patience to hold them back, and others i did not keep long enough only for someone else to spend that extra couple of months and end up with a good diging dog.
